The photograph is shot as very dramatic. It uses Chiaroscuro and the subject is very serious and brooding looking. However, he's also wearing clown makeup - providing the juxtaposition of the dramatic with the ludicrous. Instant bathos.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Just to add to what ccoa said - you can practically imagine him, without the clown make-up, getting ready to discuss something with another individual almost as if he's in a noir production. He's smoking, under being the focus of the light, and you'd not need much to change it to a still-image from a archetypal noir scene. As is though, it becomes silly due to the clown-make up, hence providing bathos.

Bathos can be both intentional and unintentional, but unintentional bathos is narm?
No, it's not. Narm is a meme from Six Feet Under. Unintentional bathos is still bathos.
Is there any horror counterpart to this trope? I know that some works juxtapose the horrifying with the humorous, but it's just right so that the humorous part becomes even more horrifying than the traditionally horrifying part.
I don't get the image.
