The description seems confused. The third paragraph says "main character or recurring character", contrasting against The Cameo or Special Guest and Celebrity Star (all potholed) as mentioned in the second. It later reiterates near the end that "a short gag, or one episode" would fall under the above tropes instead. But the description also suggests it can happen with archive footage, and that Newscaster Cameo and Leno Device are subtropes. You might be able to squeeze out a recurring role if such scenes with the person appear throughout a work, but it would be unusual to make them a main.

I haven't done a thorough wick check, but it feels like a lot of wicks/examples are simply cases where actors would be given such a credit, regardless of how important they are to the work overall.

Hey can we rename this trope to "As Themselves"? I get that the plural-sounding "them"'s kind of awkward sometimes, but so is quoting "As Himself" for female characters. Wouldn't change much other than make the name more inclusive.

Isn't there the alternate title "As Herself"?

In that Looney Tunes cartoon "The Mouse That Jack Built", the cast of the Jack Benny Program play themselves as animated mice.
