I'm not exactly an expert, but it seems to me that this trope is used on occasion as a sort of visual shorthand for steampunk. Not by itself mind you, but if someone is wearing a neo-Victorian style outfit punched up with such things as modern elements, or gears, belts, what have you, plus a sepia color scheme, that typically says steampunk. Throw in a robotic arm that shoots out Frickin' Laser Beams and you're practically screaming it through a megaphone.
I'm writing a piece and I need to describe a leg as the shape of Oscar Pistorius's prosthesis(es?). How would you describe the shape or is there already a word to describe it?
Is there a name for the trope (the reasons for which are obvious) that live action hand-missingers have a conspicuously long stub, that the hook/etc attaches to?
Discussion on The Yuuzhan Vong under Literature.
- This actually has some weird connotations. Close to the finale, the Yuuzhan Vong leader has a Rancor's arm attached. Considering Rancor's are huge, it makes you wonder how big he is.
- That depends. Did they specify that it was a full-grown rancor's arm?
- If the above is about Tsavong Lah, it wasn't a rancor arm, it was a radank (a creature from the Vong's galaxy) arm.
Don't ask me, I just fix wicks.
