Should this trope be considered a sub-trope of Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot?

Quick note on how Zoids deals with this. There are a fairly significant number of separate continuities within the franchise, each one plays this trope differently. It's played as alien lifeforms, genetically-engineered clones, mecha which just happen to be animal-shaped, but usually(and especially in the various anime) with some degree of sentience.
