I've noticed this with most of the Crash Bandicoot marketing in Japan as well, they make it cuter than it is in the US. Maybe we should add a sister trope, like "Crash is Cuter in Japan?"
Anybody here interested in starting an Analysis page or giving an explanation of how in the first place it's the Americans/Westerners that are obsessed with manliness and hardcore stuffs? Like, what's the origin? How Japan became more accepting to cuteness are described well enough in the description, but what about the other way around: What was the origin point of Americans preferring hardcore stuffs?
It doesn't have to be an Analysis page, if it can be done by expanding the opening paragraphs, that'll be equally good too.
This bit here:
Nintendo Power lampshaded this phenomenon in the May 2011 issue's highlight on Kirby, saying he puts on his "angry eyes" for the boxart. As did IGN, when they launched a new feature comparing different box arts. Kirby went first specifically thanks to the series' use of the trope.
Has a dead link.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror seems like it would count, but if you pay attention, you will notice that they just swapped Pink and Red Kirby's positions and pallets for the Japan and US release. (Japanese box art has Red Kirby has sword and phone with angry face, Pink kirby happy with phone, while America's has Pink kirby with a sword, phone and angry, while Red kirby is happy and has a phone)

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhat Genre is Hammering Harry?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VnJNeVhtLo
The AVGN even mentions this Trope in his video on it, but not by name.
Hide / Show RepliesThe tvtropes Hammerin' Harry page is listed on the Platform Game index
Is there a version of this trope for things other than the boxart?
Hide / Show RepliesYes. This trope.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think the Dub of Pokemon XY may have Lampshaded this in episode 11, where Serena comments on the Panchan(I think) looking "tough" in their official Pokedex image, compared the two they just met in the flesh.
Hatsune Miku's Vocaloid 3 release boxart is differs significantly between English-only voicebank and Japanese-only or bundle voicebank. Miko on English-only voicebank boxart appears significantly more mature than Japanese-only or bundle voicebank.
bundle voicebank: http://www.crypton.co.jp/mp/pages/prod/vocaloid/mikuv3_bundle.jsp English-only voicebank: http://www.crypton.co.jp/mp/pages/prod/vocaloid/mikuv3_english.jsp
I have to say personally I think this trope isn't common as made out i've seen just as many inversions as play straight

- The Gallery of Hideous Box Art has a couple of examples for us to laugh at:
- Clash at Demonhead
- El Viento
- Sky Kid (Note that the family-friendly furries became humans that blow stuff up.)
- Trouble Shooter
- Wurm
- This one is more of a coincidence, but notice back when there were two "Noah's Ark" attractions left, but only the American example is still running. Compare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RwpEZmdEFU (UK) to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2mcsYG6-tc (USA).
A notice to all those editing the page: Do not include entries like the one below.
- Frogger 3D's American box art◊ seems very awkward with his tongue sticking out right at you like that. But the Japanese box art◊ is very clever with the angle the frog is being shown while he's hopping over the carnage.
This entry is not "The American boxart is grittier because <Insert Reason>." This entry is "I like the Japanese boxart better", which has nothing to do with this page. The American one is not grittier/darker/more hardcore, so this doesn't belong.
Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.Apparently an episode of the Kirby Anime combines this with Superdickery https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpVULlSxeEQ&feature=fvwrel
I must be Japeneze, since I prefer Cute Over Rated M for Manly
Hide / Show RepliesI must be Ameriken, since I prefer Rated M for Manly over cute.
Oh wait, I am Ameriken!
Anyway, both have their place.
Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.this might just be nit picking, but rather than starting a trivial edit war, WHY exactly does phantom Zelda's appearance on the NA Spirit tracks box art 'not count'? the Phantom's are separate enemies sure, but that distinctive coloration, and the eyes are exclusive to Zelda possessing them? the comment just seems kinda...I'd say maybe derogatory?
Concerning Nie R, I thought it was the other way around - The old dude was the original plan, but they made the alternate prettyboy version for Japan.
Half (if not a majority) of the article seems focused on old retro boxart, and speaks more about the company who produced it than a country.
Hide / Show RepliesOr about the company's view of what will sell in given country X. That's all the trope is describing, weird cosmetic changes made for marketing reasons.
Jak and Daxter got the reverse of this: Compare the original American cover◊ with
the linked cover is hard to see as the photo is tiny
edit: What's more the cover linked to that is supposedly (I am not an expert) the japanese box art is the same identical tiny photo
