Interesting, but I don't think your logic holds up. That's like saying Metallica is a Psychedelic Rock band because metal evolved from Psychedelic Rock.
I've been doing some thinking about this genre, and I came up with a rather crazy idea that will most likely be written off as bullshit. Still, won't hurt to explain my thoughts, would it?
Alt-metal is defined as a fusion of metal and alt-rock (hence the name). Post-rock is a subgenre of alt-rock. There are lots of metal bands that incorporate strong post-rock influence — Neurosis, Isis, Pelican, Cult of Luna, Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch, maybe Gojira... could they, theoretically, be classified as alt-metal bands?
