Part of the reason sugar was such a selling point of pre-sugared cereals is that it was rationed during the war, and continued to be rationed quite a bit after. It was a luxury good, and in a way a touchstone that said that WWII was well and truly over.

Wait, what? How did bacon "get its start" by being marketed as part of a complete breakfast?
Wasn't bacon around for hundreds of years prior to even the 'concept' of "marketing"?
