I feel I must protest the assertions across these articles about Tiffany "dismissing" Geoffrey as a witch. Not once does anyone say that he can't be a witch, not even the senior witches. Nobody so much as questions why he's at the war council against the elves, and Mrs. Earwig even says that she might try and follow Tiffany's example with him at some point. Wingshreds, Tiffany even gives him Granny's broom and steading!

The Calm Weaver thing, I feel, is more what kind of witch-in-training he is, much as Petulia is a Pig Borer.

Would Granny Weatherwax's death count under Surprisingly Sudden Death, Bait-and-Switch or both (or neither)?

I pulled this from the discussion of Geoffrey not being a witch:

  • The only justification is that he gets along with the men well, and can help them more than he can help the women, since women would be uncomfortable around him.

It's raised as a possibility right at the beginning before Tiffany gets to know him - and long before she coins the word "calm weaver" - but, as it turns out, they aren't. The book's very clear that nobody is uncomfortable around Geoffrey. Pp 167-68 (UK paperback) say "The ladies of the villages had taken Geoffrey to their hearts too. It was astonishing. There was something about his willingness to stop and talk, his gentle smile, and pleasant manner that made them immediately warm to him."
