The main Shannara page looks a little like it has an information overload. Should we move things like summaries off to the appropriate page, create pages for the last three books, etc? Or at least use folders to separate each set of books? I quite like the layout of the main Narnia page, which also has the whole "several books over several generations in the same world, oh look now I have a prequel, and here's a side story" layout.

Please feel free to create pages for the last three. I'm the one who created the pages for the first bunch of series; the reason I can't do the last trilogy or so is because I've never read them. Anyway, the idea is to move all tropes that don't relate to the series as a whole off of this page. I was told we had to keep the summaries though (which is weird since each page already has its own, much better summary). Again moving of non-series as a whole tropes is good, and please, please, please, do create pages for the last trilogy.

Yeah, I never read the last ones either (I'm only on Talismans so far) so I can't write anything about that, but it seems odd to have summaries for subsequent series right in view of people who haven't read them.

I was told we had to have them at the time that I was rewritig the page. If we don't anymore, feel free to do something about it, so long as you leave the summaries on each series page more or less alone.

Is it legitimate to fish for opinions before adding to this article? I ask because I thought of adding Eretria to "Action Girl", but she's not an exact fit. So, I hoped that there'd be some folks who'd pitch in some opinions on the matter.

Pro: She planned how to rescue herself (but that leads into the first con below), and she had her own moves to make on horseback to help Wil get through the Wilderrun. Con: She waited around for Wil to help her escape. And in a way, she tried to charm, but then ended up just manipulating her way out of her problem (being owned by Cephelo.

Anyway, please chime in. Thank you.

I would argue she might fit Plucky Girl but not full on Action Girl. And of course it's legit to fish for opinions. Why have a discussion page otherwise? Anyway, nice to see someone else adding to the page for once.

Amber: [From edit reasons] I'm attempting to create separate pages for each of the major series. I think there's just too much material for them to all fit nicely on page. As I go, I'll try and modify the descriptions on this page, cut down on the spoilers, etc. Help would be appreciated; anyone know how to create the "Main" link at the top of a page?

First off, there shouldn't be any spoiler space in the description, only in the trope list - see the Spoiler Policy. I'd also say only the most recent books need spoilering at all, not the original trilogy.

This main page should describe each book in the original trilogy, because they're stand-alone stories with no overarching plot, then the story arc of each of the subsequent trilogies. It's not necessary to describe the actual plot here, just the set up, as with the paragraph for the word and void series, which describes it well enough, without any plot details - an approach which also reduces spoilers.

A Shannara namespace isn't really called for here, and it may complicate connecting the pages up with other name spaces. The appropriate namespace for the entire series, and all its components, is Literature

So you're saying that each of the books should just have its own title and not be linked back to here? All right then, I'll keep that in mind.

What you said about plot sounds right to me, and is what I originally thought, but the original entries here were detailed enough that I wasn't sure if I should modify them or not. Didn't realise the thing about spoilers in the description; cool. I'll just remove possible spoilers from the description. Given the lack of entries on this page, I think it's a fair bet that many people on this site, haven't read the series.

Just to verify, I take it you do support the idea of creating a separate page for each of these series?

A separate page for each, linked to on this page, e.g:

The lack of entries might just be because people felt the page was good enough, but then I wrote it, and all the plot descriptions, so I would think that. :)

In practice, putting the pages under main is fine; it's just that the only reason everything ends up in that namespace is an accident of the site's history.

Once the other pages have been created, it may look better to downgrade the series names to bullet points, depending on the amount of space between them, but we can decide that when we get there.

Cool. If you don't mind, I'll write the entry for Heritage tonight (I think I've got a pretty good idea of what to say). I can probably do Jerle Shannara as well; but I haven't really read High Druid or Genesis, so somebody else may need to write those (unless you want me transposing from Wikipedia).

Not quite sure what you mean by Putting the pages under the main. Is that referring to my original plan to title everything Shannara/series name here? Cause if so, I couldn't figure out how to make the "main" link appear on those anyway. I'm probably going to take your advice and make future entries separate (and if you want to alter the Sword of Shannara trilogy one to make it a regular series entry, go ahead, I'm just not sure how to about it).

The names could be

  1. Main/TrilogyName
  2. Literature/TrilogyName
  3. Shannara/TrilogyName

The first is the default, and what I mean by putting it under main, though the second is tidier. The third isn't really appropriate here.

You may have noticed I rewrote the first paragraph under Heritage to summarise the entire foursome. As long as that';s left on this page, the rest of the detail can go to the new Heritage page.

I've read High Druid and Genesis, but only once. in fact, you can probably tell from the level of detail which ones I'd reread. You shouldn't copy Wikipedia wholesale, but getting facts from their and rewriting in your own words is fair enough.

About the Word and Void series, do you know if Brooks has ever said whether he decided to link it to Shannara after writing it, or that he always planned the link?

I don't know if he ever said he planned on linking the last to or not. Looking back, there are some hints, what with the King of the Silver River talking about how he recieved his charge from the Word, but at the same time, there's some notable problems, like the lack of black people.

If you want to fix the Sword one to be Literature/Trilogy Name, please go right ahead. I just don't know how to do it. The only reason I did Shannara/Trilogy Name in the first place was because I was trying to make them easier to link; since that hasn't worked, I'd say it was pretty pointless.

Looking forward to any help you can give me with the writing and trope lists. I'm a big fan of the series, and I think it's a little underepresented on this site. Do check me if you think I'm going overboard, but otherwise, away we go.

EDIT: I've added Heritage. Thanks to my stupidity concerning redirects however, the title currently reads "Literature: The Heritage Of Shannara". Any idea how to take it back to just "The Heritage Of Shannara", which is what it originally said?

EDIT: I've added Voyage. Thanks for fixing Sword. Question: why are we listing the books as Literature/title? Looking around the site, none of the other fantasy series are listed as such. I'm thinking that maybe they should just be listed as main/title like everything else. That's how I've created Voyage anyway. Feel free to add some stuff to any of the pages too, or the character sheet. I garuntee there's lots of stuff I'll miss.

EDIT: For some reason, typing in The Sword Of Shannara Trilogy isn't redirecting to the current page, despite that being at the top under redirect/alt title. Any idea what the problem is?
