The idea that a new student at Bixby High would receive near-celebrity status kind of irks me since my dad and sisters went to Bixby High and I went to Bixby schools till the year the third book was published. If Dad, a new kid from LA in 1970 whose dad worked on Apollo I and served in WWII, didn't get a big status boost from being a shiny new toy then why would anyone else, including Jessica? Bixby's not THAT small and it's actually a city.
