This is not quite true. The 10th Mountain Division, that Joe Bishop was quoted as being part of, had a small part in some training and anti-terrorism action in Nigeria. https://www.army.mil/article/198066/us_security_assistance_soldiers_nigerian_army_partner_to_combat_terrorism

The first X-Force book was released slightly before US Army soldiers were actually killed in Nigeria as part of this operation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongo_Tongo_ambush

The role in the book sounds larger than that in real life, but it sounds like a plausible escalation of the activity there.
