Chance the Gardener is now called Seemingly Profound Fool. Anyway, this listed example doesn't seem to fit the description for that trope:

Chance the Gardener: The drummer Vlad encounters in the Isles seems to have some deeper importance, but might just be a weirdo who likes to drum. The character was based on Brust's friend, who really is that into drumming.
