re: Lady Macbeth, it's been a while since I read it, but while Jacqueline wasn't the instigator of the plot with Simon, she was the one who planned most of it, wasn't she? Knowing that if he did things his way, he'd get himself caught. So it wasn't just to protect him after the fact, it was to get them both what they ultimately wanted. So I think the trope still fits, doesn't it?
