In the "Just Bugs Me" section, a discussion says that masturbation for artificial insemination is acceptable in Catholic theology is acceptable as it is for procreative purposes. Thing is, Artificial insemination is itself condemned as interfering in the natural procreative process, and ranked with birth control. This is here because I Haven't seen the movie.
Can anybody tell me the significance of the fact that the Pope at the end of the movie took the name "Luke"?
Langdon implies it has something to do with accepting science or something like that. I don't get it.
My other signature is a Gundam. Hide / Show RepliesLuke was, himself, a man of medicine, ego a man of science, as well as one who is scripturally significant. Taking Luke as his papal name states that he intends to embrace natural observation on scientific issues, rather than literalism.
In fact, this has been the case for the most part in the Roman Catholic Church, though there have been some backsteps in the new papacy. *
Should the fact that the subplot with the two BBC reporters was removed, really count as Adaptation Decay? So-called "British" journalist Gunther Glick is painfully obviously an American pretending to be British for some unknown reason (and failing miserably), thus to my mind this omission was an improvement.
Removed from under Slap-on-the-Wrist Nuke: Back-of-the-envelope calculation puts 250mg of antimatter right around six kilotons of Big Bang Boom. That's maybe half a Hiroshima or a third of a Nagasaki. Not the kind of thing you'd want to set off in the back yard to amuse the kiddies on Guy Fawkes Day.
Keep in mind this batch of antimatter (pure positrons, as opposed to anti-hydrogen) produces pure light, hence not the full body of effects that would come from a nuke, just the light.
Fat man was ~1gram (976mg) of matter in whole. About 30 to 50% (293 to 488mg) of that was light. 250mg is a small bit under the low end of that range.
In retrospect, the light from Little Boy was between 210mg and 350mg, and makes for a better comparison. I'll make the appropriate change.
Hide / Show RepliesI flubbed again. 250mg of positrons counts for not a quarter gram but a half a gram of energy, thanks to the 250mg of matter that combines with it. I was right in the first place comparing this to the Nagasaki flash.
Math is hard.
Hi folks I need a bit of help with an example(s) from a Special Efforts thread. See InstantDeathBullet Sandbox for more details Links to threads are in the description.
This lacking some key context or some additional details also any distinctions between the book and the film.
The Aversion portion is likely to be cut as most use of aversions with the Instant Death Bullet trope are not proper use of Aversion.
What I would like is a bit more detail. Like specific details on the instances where the killer shoots and kills their victim instantly for both the film and the book if possible.
•Both used and averted in the film of Angels and Demons, where some of The Dragon's victims die instantly, but at least two others take another shot to die.
