I removed this part from the Hide Your Lesbians text:

Since Christie held rather old-fashioned views, it's possible that the subtext isn't even intentional (strong-willed, 'mannish' female characters similar to Miss Hinchcliffe actually show up in several other of her novels).

Considering that The Moving Finger, the previous Miss Marple novel, also featured a rather obvious Camp Gay character among the suspects, it seems Christie was well aware of homosexual stereotypes, and had no problem using them in her novels. So the lesbian subtext in this one is probably quite intentional. Note that subtext doesn't just come from Hinchcliffe being "mannish", but also from the fact that she is living together with another unmarried woman, seems to find men repulsive, and is utterly devastated when Miss Murgatroyd is murderered, wanting revenge on the killer.

You can only speculate, though. These are, ater all, novels written in the 30s.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

40s and 50s for those two, actually. But, I grant, still before Christie became particularly explicit in describing queer characters.

Please note that all the dialogue excerpts on this page are taken from the BBC television adaptation, not the novel. The "Lampshade Hanging" segment applies exclusively to the adaptation.
