hmm, the description in Laconic doesn't feel quite...laconic or what the trope is really about. It's not necessarily making a joke at a group's expense and then trying to avoid the backlash from the joke, i.e. trying to get away with being offensive. More like, panic over being falsely identified as A, turns into even more panic over being perceived as being bigoted towards A.
