Should All Just a Dream (2329 wicks) be on here?
Pinball cleanup threadThe following were added without discussion:
- Even Evil Has Standards: A case that has a villain reject another, terrible villainous deed due to his/her dislike for it.
- Harmless Villain: A kid-friendly, incompetent villain who almost always fails miserably every time.
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: What happens when a Harmless Villain gets a promotion and starts being more threatening.
- Knight of Cerebus: A villain who adds more drama to an otherwise-comedic franchise in contrast to the funny moments and/or Harmless Villains before him/her.
- Poke the Poodle: A mildly evil deed that is considered "ok, just not too nice" by both the good guys and the audience.
Should they be on the page?
Hide / Show RepliesEverything minus Even Evil Has Standards should be nuked.
Well, I'd give Harmless Villain (by itself) a little leeway, but still.
Pinball cleanup threadI removed Did Not Do The Research and Better Than It Sounds from the page. Neither is a trope, and as far as I know this page is supposed to be for actual ones only.
What about [Bishoujo]? I mean [Bishonen]'s there so [Bishoujo] should be too =)
Hide / Show RepliesBishoujo is a fanspeak definition, not a trope, so no, it shouldn't be on there.
I recommend Complete Monster. There are over 10000 articles.
EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't notice there were two lists.
Edited by ChaoticQueenFor anyone who's interested, I've proposed a new method for deciding which tropes get included on Tropes Of Legend in this thread.
Someone added the following three tropes without discussion. I've pulled them here because I don't think they belong. What do others think?
- Guile Hero: A heroic character who is similar to a Magnificent Bastard, but mainly operates by manipulating the bad guys and has shorter-term planning, all that for heroic reasons and goals.
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: The exact opposite of a Complete Monster. A character of pure goodness who is completely and utterly incorruptible, even by the most evil and powerful corrupting influence.
- Smug Super: Similarly, a character who is just as arrogant as a Smug Snake, but lords on about his / her immense power instead of being sneaky and manipulative.
Tropes Of Legend itself has 34 wicks. No.
Seven barrels of Laser Death.I, Tracer, am shocked — shocked, do you hear! — that none of the "Shipping" related tropes appear among the tropes of legend. What with everybody speculating about who's doing it with whom, for just about every show ever made.
Edited by tracer Hide / Show RepliesShipping itself has 1410 wicks. I added together the number of collective wicks of every page with "Ship" or "Shipping" in its title, the total was 9489. Most notable was Shipper on Deck (1371 wicks) and Ship Tease (2304 wicks)
Seven barrels of Laser Death.I think Alternate Character Interpretation showed be placed on this. Every Character from She Hulk to Luke Skywalker can be interpreted another way.
Hide / Show RepliesI nominate Wish Ful Fillment that trope is the mother of all fiction and of some of the most popular tropes like Mary Sue
Hide / Show RepliesI'm surprised "Trope" itself isn't on this page!
Hide / Show RepliesI nominate Character Alignment, they are a prominant feature in Character Sheets and spawned the Lawful Stupid, Chaotic Stupid section and Selfish Good Selfish Evil trope. And it is the Morality Tropes of all Morality Tropes plus the way to judge a character's morals and ethics.
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree. Hide / Show RepliesI totally back that up, the massive amount of subpages makes it a shoe-in.
Edit: I did some research, Character Alignment and its nine subpages are in 5324 pages, with Chaotic Evil alone being in 727 pages. Is that enough or does it have to be the appearances of Character Alignment itself? *
Edited by dalexterminate Seven barrels of Laser Death. So the list and page are supposed to be a list of tropes, right? But things like The Oldest Ones in the Book (an index, not a trope) and YMMV (which has a banner warning editors never to list it as a trope) are also on this list. Huh?
These are widely used Things of Legend, so maybe they should be on a sublist within this page, a list of non-trope pages of legend.
Edited by ArcadesSabboth Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.Since we have So Bad, It's Good, shouldn't we have So Bad It's Horrible as well?
Edited by ading Hide / Show Replies"So Bad, It's Horrible found in 64 articles, excluding discussions."
No.
Edited by ading I'm a Troper!!!It'll never get enough wicks after joining the Permanent Red Link Club.
Some people recently added some tropes, as I guess without asking anyone. Here's the list, including the current number of wicks:
- Bittersweet Ending 2365
- Happy Ending 335
- Jerkass Woobie 1415
- Lighter and Softer 1658
- Love It or Hate It 659
- This Cannot Be! 284
- This Is Unforgivable! 354
- Villainous Breakdown 1959
The two Ending Tropes might be justified (and Bittersweet Ending will be one of the Overdosed Tropes soon, so that's OK anyway), but the two "This..." tropes really aren't common enough, so I cut them. The other tropes are arguable... I'll let them here for a while, let's wait what others say.
Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein Leben Hide / Show RepliesI'd be fine with the ending tropes, mostly because they're common in real life, too. Of the others, the only one I recall seeing with any frequency is Villainous Breakdown, so I'd say the rest are too obscure to have on this list. (And I'm using the metric of "have I seen it or not" because I instantly recognize all but 2 or 3 of the tropes on the main page.)
If we use the 2500 wick stick, then none of them qualify.
I'm a Troper!!!Cerebus Syndrome. It's gained popularity outside TV Tropes, and know it's the stock phrase to refear to this.
Just call me Nac. Hide / Show RepliesAnd I realized that we don't have Heartwarming Moments. Consensus to add under Sugar Wiki?
I just noticed that Love Triangle, which is one of the Oldest Ones in the Book is not on this page. I believe that this error requires correction.
Edited by 96.234.3.121 Hide / Show Replies"Found in: 1760 articles, excluding discussions."
Well, I'd say that counts as oft-referenced.
EDIT: Woah, just found out that wasn't enough. I'm something of a n00b, so I misjudged.
Edited by Webby Actually a girl.Nominating Let's Get Dangerous!. Let's Get Dangerous found in: 1081 articles, excluding discussions.
This title has brought 1,963 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.
Dramaturg, troper, theatre reviewer. (Please hire me.) Hide / Show RepliesSee above: 2500 wicks gives us enough of Tropes Of Legend. If we allowed all with more than 1000 wicks, this page would triple in size.
Edited by Frank75 Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein LebenI think we should make a decision when a trope is a trope of legend and when it isn't. A work is Trope Overdosed if it has at least 1000 wicks, but when is a trope a trope of legend?
2000 wicks doesn't sounds unreasonable for me. Just in comparison: We have about 20000 trope pages now, about the same number of work pages, and more than 40000 sub pages.
I also do think that every trope page that has a number of sub pages should automatically count too.
Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein Leben Hide / Show RepliesAdded a number of tropes. 2000 actually may be a bit low, but 3000 should be OK, I'd say. (However, The Libby wouldn't make it then, but is this so bad?)
Edited by Frank75 Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein LebenBTW, I miss Deconstruction on the list.
Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein LebenYou added a bunch of tropes to the list without giving descriptions. I wasn't sure which ones belonged on there, so I removed them.
I had hoped someone else would add the descriptions. All of these tropes have 2500+ wicks (Mad Scientist even over 5k), IMO they should qualify. See also other threads.
Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein LebenShould Ted Baxter go here? According to the wick page, Tropes Of Legend go into 300-1000 range, and Ted Baxter is nearing 1000 wicks so should it go here? Also Those Two Guys which has I believe 1222 wicks.
I'm a Troper!!! Hide / Show RepliesI think that page is a bit outdated. See Overdosed Tropes: These are those with 2500 wicks and more, and that's already a big list. See above.
Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein LebenTook the freedom to up the ranges (for wicks) somewhat to reflect that the wiki has grown.
Edited by Frank75 Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein LebenAdaptation Decay was listed on its own page as one of the Tropes Of Legend. Wha'happen?
Though it has few wicks, being the consolidated, absolutely set-in-stone source for Canon, I'm nominating Universe Bible.
But soft! What rock through yonder window breaks? It is a brick! And Juliet is out cold.Wouldn't Big Damn Heroes be appropriate to have on here? From the Related To page
Big Damn Heroes found in: 2009 articles, excluding discussions.
This title has brought 4,534 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.
EDIT: It's on now.
Edited by TheInferno "The fact that your food can be made into makeshift bombs alarms the Hell out of me, Scrye." - CharlatanI would like to nominate "Funny Aneurysm" Moment. 800 wicks, 5266 externals and a multi-page trope.
Nominating "Ugly Guy, Hot Wife" for this page. I think it's pervasive enough through all of fiction to allow- and it's given birth to at least one other trope.
Is this really a "Just for Fun" kind of page?
