Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series is basically like that. It was a big influence on Mass Effect. Basically these gigantic spaceborne artificial intelligences have it in their heads that all organic life is vile and so must be exterminated, but the major powers in the galaxy have advanced so far they're all just a bunch of pussies, so they hire us to take them on for them.
Are there pointers if Earth is the alien empire’s “Manifest Destiny”? I mean this savages are clearly in need of civilizing and assimilated to a culture that has expanded to the stars (and none of that The Path Not Taken bs, if one path isn’t taken doesn’t mean the other path ends in a cul de sac, technologically speaking).
Uh, I was just looking on the main page and it seemed to imply that if the aliens are hungry and well, want to eat eat us, that we're the worst possible choice. In fact, it seemed to imply that we're safe from being eaten by any type of creature and I can assure you that's not the case. That's why lions and tigers are behind bars in zoos! Tragically, there have been people who go into predatory animal cages and guess what? They are quickly consumed. So, it seems part of How To Invade An Alien Planet is not exactly right.

Is there a story about aliens hiring humans to be their mercenaries? Is there a story where this is the first contact scenario? I want to read that one.
