The movie got a few things wrong. Neville was not at the south street seaport during the night attack, when he was rescued by the woman and child. In this scene, he was on the west side of manhattan, facing New Jersey. Also, it does not seem likely that the GW Bridge would've been left in tact(alt ending), if the gov/military decided to blow all other bridges, and flood all tunnels. Also, in terms of theatrical ending, the same holds true, how did the woman and child drive to ermine if manhattan was completely cut off? The film made a point of telling us that manhattan was quarantined and effectively cut off. This is a case of a movie that does not follow the rules of the world it created.
