I did not solve this one. However, I now think that the letter Wargraves produces, supposedly from the actress, is actually a big clue. Who else would know Wargraves would answer such a letter, and benefit form Wargraves being able to name-drop her?
I guess I don't have a copy of the book on me (why this is in Discussion) but I think the wording of the part about the actress is honest but misleading in the way certain parts of The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd are, if you know what I mean, and I now wonder if there is a connection.
Lastly, my memory seems to suggest that Wargraves verse, "... one went to Chancery,...", is the only verse about someone just up and leaving.
