So I just heard this little bit from the first Shrek.
Shrek: "You were expecting maybe Prince Charming?" Fiona: "Yes, I was, actually."
And I was immediately reminded of Shrek 2 when Shrek finds Fiona's diary from when she was in the tower, and most of the pages are about her waiting for Prince Charming.
Would this count as a bit of foreshadowing?

Wasn't the guy in the first film just one of Snow White's dwarfs? When he first appeared, the dialogue was "Snow, I can't accept this" "Don't worry about it, I've got 6 more at home"
I personally think it was a gigantic What the Hell Hero moment.
Sure, Rumpel was the evil guy, but still, Fiona killed his one and only friend and companion he had for years!
And then they ll laughed and pointed at the, still smoking, feet of the former goose. And -then- Rumpel was forced to dance, instead of being able to weep for his friend.
Maybe it was time we moved Shrek to its own designated page titled WesternAnimation/Shrek2001 ("Shrek (2001)") since there was the book that exists, too.
