When Wells is about to remove the key which will result in Stevenson dying, Stevenson sees this and nods at him. To me, this comes across as Stevenson knowing he's a monster and that it's best if he is destroyed. That seems like a trope, but darned if I can figure out which one. Maybe a heel face turn, but that doesn't seem right.
