Broken Aesop: I don't think that the Aesop is that you can't fix your past mistakes, and have to learn to live with them, I think it's more 'don't be selfish'. Evan was being selfish by trying to keep Kayleigh in his life. It's only when he can let her go and accept that she's not meant to be in his life that anyone can be happy, including him. Or, in the director's cut, he's trying to keep himself alive, and it's only when he can learn to make that ultimate sacrifice that anyone can be happy.
