There Is No Kill Like Overkill: I wouldn't step on it. I wouldn't even shoot it with my phaser; I'd borrow yours to shoot it, then shoot your phaser. Eeeuuugugghhgh.
A bazillion times in this article (and everywhere anyone talks about this movie), it's assumed that the regulations are to raise shields when a friendly fleet vessel approaches and doesn't respond to communications. But the movie never states this, the TV shows don't bear this out, and Khan himself basically says "Of course their shields are down, Federation ships don't raise shields for other Federation ships."
Watch out where you step, or we'll be afoot. Hide / Show RepliesThat's kinda the point, the gap between what they are supposed to be doing and what they are doing in practice is the weak spot that allows Khan to slip the knife in and twist it. It's Starfleet's Honour Before Reason failing incarnated, for the movie, in Kirk.
- Desk Jockey / Kicked Upstairs / Retired Badass (take your pick): Kirk is far from happy in the role of admiral; boredom and feelings of being old and useless lead him to take the joyride on Enterprise that eventually leads him running into Khan.
Considering that Spock's death in this movie is pretty much a case of It Was His Sled and provides setup for the following movies, should this be made "spoilers off"?
And on a related note, why are there slash marks in this post for no good reason, and why is the above link not working?
