I agree that is needs to be unbiased, and that would also make clear the bad points of the film. What I don't quite agree on is why critics reviewed it bad for a REASON. What reason was that? Was there a conspiracy?
No, the critics reviewed it badly because it's a terrible film. That's the reason.
Pages this fanboy-ish don't really need permission to be edited. I'll give it a go here, mainly because I actually have interacted with people who liked the movie, so I can do a bit of a job explaining why. Feel free to make further edits as long as you don't go too far one way or the other.
See you in the discussion pages. In all honesty, I didn't see advertised much at all. I worked at a Mc Donald's when this movie came out in theatres, and it seemed pretty cheesy so I didn't bother seeing it. It wasn't until Arin Hanson himself said that it was a great movie and to at least give it a chance.
I'm not going to lie, I enjoyed the movie. Just the fact that they show all the exposition alone is enough to make me like it, and it's enjoyable in its cheesiness. Yes, it's a cheesy movie, but for a cheesy movie, it's top notch.
This troper makes no apologies for it being one of my favorite movies. I'm actually overjoyed that other people are able to see it for what it is!
Hide / Show RepliesI was surprised at this movie, I'll admit. Even as a kid I found the cartoon ridiculous, so I was shocked to see the live action movie pulled off so well.
“Don’t say, ‘That’s the way I am — it’s my character.' It’s your lack of character. Esto vir! — Be a man!” - St. Josemaria EscrivaThis troper saw it in a huge, packed theatre. You would NEVER guess the box office performance or the bad critic reviews from just witnessing the excitement of the crowd!
Critics are not the Word of God, and once in a while a film is panned which is widely held to be a classic later. Speed Racer may not be an all-time classic... but ever since the film's release there has been a significant following which has framed the film as being heavily misunderstood. Besides, reading much of its negative critical reception, the common tone among critics for this particular film was one of resistance to the film on the grounds it was, quite simply, too much like a cartoon. Which is kind of silly, and also a disservice to the movie. As the cartoon aspect is intentionally contrasted with a complex and rather well-acted family drama at the center.
It has since become an evidently popular cult film.
Is it okay if I make this article less blatantly biased? It seems to be all for "this movie is awesome!!1!", although it was panned by critics, and speaking from personal experience, I don't know anyone who really liked it that much. I mean, critics did review it poorly for a REASON. Sure, it has many fans, which is great, but I think a wider viewpoint might be beneficial to the article.
