Chekhov's Gun: The Bob Lee Swagger frameup depends on the FBI's finding his rifle. Was the weapon test-fired? Bob asks. "Wasn't necessary," the FBI answers, having matched the bullet fragments to the weapon's barrel. How is it, then, that nobody noticed that the weapon hadn't been fired? The idea that Bob Lee would change out his firing pins but put away a dirty weapon is absurd. So is the idea that an FBI lab wouldn't check the barrel for explosive residues.

Just stashing this here until I figure out Do We Have This One;
Michailo Sczerbiak: ...nothing, no matter how horrible, ever really happens without the approval of the government. Over there, and here. The problem isn't the doing. It's the people in power having to admit that they knew. The prisoners are tortured at Abu Ghraib, and only the underlings go to jail. Their bosses knew. We know their bosses knew. But you don't say it.

I'd be interested in doing a writeup of the Swagger novel series, including the tropes listed here for the novels. However, as I'm relatively new, I'm unsure of the best way to link the literature section to the others, as it would be more accurate to name it "Bob Lee Swagger" or maybe "Swagger series." Thoughts?
