Look, I realize that Coleman Francis was incompetent beyond belief when it came to film-making, but unless I see some solid evidence to the contrary, I refuse to believe that he was trying to go for the 'Loveable Rogue' trope with Griffin. Except for a couple of moments of common decency (that could easily be interpreted as being pragmatic rather than altruistic), Griffin is a sociopathic, vile low-life through and through, and it REALLY doesn't come across like he was supposed to be anything BUT that in the movie.
