While the idea of Donna's mother being played by Cher of all people is hysterical in itself, it doesn't match how she was described in the first film.

Ruby was implied to be rather strict and up tight about her daughter's behavior, calling her a slut, and disowning her after she got pregnant. When Donna bemoans her wild and promiscuous past, her friends say she's feeling Catholic Guilt, implying that Ruby was a righteous, and firm fundamentalist woman, which would explain her great disappointment in her daughter's life choices.

Cher's portrayal of Ruby, so far, is a far cry from how she was described in the first film. It's possible she was still strict and uptight about her daughter's life choices, but seems to be a rather larger than life, party crashing, rich socialite herself.

I also thought Ruby was supposedly dead in the first film; when Donna states that having Sam, Harry and Bill all there at the same time, had to be the work of someone "up there", who didn't like Donna very much, and most likely it was her Mother, to which both Rosie and Tanya agree, referring to Ruby in the past tense, as being awful.

Now it seems, Ruby has outlived her daughter, and has a strained yet familiar relationship with the granddaughter she never wanted Donna to have in the first place; referring to Sophie, somewhat fondly as "little girl."
