Sounds like all like the humour in this film went over the head of whoever wrote that.
Also - "Jerk with a heart of gold". Schmidt is far too meek to be a jerk. Jerks tend to be brash. All his uncharitable thoughts about his wife are very clearly kept to himself. It's illustrated that usually he never speaks his mind, hence the way he vents in the first Dear Ngudu scene. And when he finally urges his daughter not to marry Randall, it's also quite clearly the first time he's said anything like this.
