I'd like to recommend the fanfic Forsaken to be added to the Fanfic section of the Epic Battle Fantasy trope page, under "general fics." It is an excellent work that manages to work out Lance's origins, and how he came to be the power-crazed would-be tyrant he is. It takes place mostly during EBF 2, obviously. The user Abaresque wrote it, and it can be found on Archive of Our Own.
