Hey so has anyone ever noticed that there are some really really weird elements in this author's later stories and somewhat in this one as well? No hate against the author themselves, they do introduce interesting concepts to this franchise's universe but at the same time they also write some things that are a tad creepy at best? It kind of ruins the flow of their stories for me.
Like in this other story "Crushed Spirits," Percy requests to suckle on Emily's cheek (which had apparently happened in a previous story too??) and the writer likens it to a mother breastfeeding their child???? It feels almost fetishy and it also kind of ruins the tone of how a character like the trains could experience severe emotional trauma and how they go about having to deal with that. Like I get wanting to theorize how living trains who rarely have more than one limb, if at all, show any type of affection to one another but again, it really borders on genuinely unsettling a lot of the time.
Also in this author's personal universe, some of the characters just have something like prophetic/telepathic dreams (e.g. The sequel to this fic has Thomas experience a dream that shows him what Emily is doing in real time). I've only read a few of these fics because there are 216 stories in total, but I have not found any explanation for why these occur and why both humans and sentient trains can experience them.
It's just been really weird finding this trope page and going from thinking "Huh, I was not expecting a fan story like this from a children's franchise with a rather simple/whimsical premise" to "This got way too bizarre and unsettling way too quickly."
