Now that 1d4chan seems to be gone, would it be worthwhile to hoover up the story from archive.org and host it here? And if so, would it go in a Quotes or a Recap tab?

It's gone down and come back a number of times, let's wait a few days and see what happens imo.

Considering a GM has almost complete control over all situations and resources available to the players, and he has the final word over what happens, Old Man Henderson could only pull what he did because the GM let him. Even a whole tome of background story doesn't change the GM's control over the game, or for that matter Old Man Henderson's character sheet.

For a GM described as unfair and obnoxious as he was, it would be trivial to have any character killed or stopped in some way, especially one so reckless. Yet Old Man Henderson survived long enough to kill Hastur.

Would that mean we should add Unreliable Narrator or Artistic License as tropes? Maybe as YMMV?

It depends on the GM. The way the GM is described by Waffle House Millionaire and A Self Called 'Nowhere' seems that he's kind of an idiot.

Sooo it's likely a case of a Killer Game Master not knowing exactly what kind of shit he's letting happen until it's too late.

I know I've had things happen like that. For example: A DM of mine knew, but didn't exactly realize the strength of the archer I had. He could accurately hit specific parts of a target, from a retarded range, and I ended up shooting off the 2nd Arc End-Boss Dragon's left wing from a mile-and-a-half away and killed it from it's impact on the ground. Seriously. DM was a wee bit pissed at that.

But Old Man Henderson isn't just about an unexpected moment in the finale. The whole character was built around regular Ass Pull and reckless craziness, which is the opposite of how a clever player could sneak something past an unattentive GM. By the second or third time, there would be no way he wouldn't know what was going on, and if he was truly a Killer Game Master who would punish players on a whim, he could have just Dropped a Bridge on Him.

It's a bit too narratively tidy that Old Man Henderson would stay alive until the finale, to die a Heroic Sacrifice, while a Butt-Monkey player would have his characters dying all the time.

At the point the GM makes enough explosives available to kill Hastur and let the players set them up, there is no way they don't know what's going to happen.

If you're smart, which Waffle House Millionaire clearly was, you can get away with some crazy shit in any tabletop game despite it seemingly being obvious.

Trust me, when you're smarter and know more about your game than your DM does, you can get away with a lot of shit you wouldn't expect to be able to.

Besides it makes for a better story.

Since Old Man Henderson gets a page here I thought it would be prudent to bring up a tale that, while much shorter than the Old Man Henderson saga, is arguably just as funny. It is a tale of a super alpha GM vs a snubbed player seeking retribution by pulling a stunt so gamebreaking he was kicked out of the campaign after twice forcing the GM to pull a Scratch to reset things.

Somebody should try to make a page out of this story for the sheer fact it scores greater than a two on the Henderson scale. I would, but it's late and I'm super tired.

Anyway, here it is, as told by the perpetrator (who calls himself The Hypno Jew:) http://1d4chan.org/wiki/That_Guy_Destroys_Psionics
