Actually I read an analysis somewhere on the web (maybe even The Other Wiki) which stated exactly that: Wilhelm Busch used exaggeration for comical effect.
Besides, I'm pretty sure that noone can live on less than three eggs a day. Since she's a widow, she probably inherited something from her late husband. Otherwise she couldn't afford her own house. Think about it.
Fuhrmann, es kostet dir noch dein Leben
Considering the entry What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous? : The troper remarked that Widow Bolte's reaction to the death of her chickens was over the top. I'd like to point out that those chickens probably were part of her income and/or daily food. When you think of Bolte being a widow, probably with no or only a little income on her own you see she's dependant on her chickens. Of course she's a typical German Kleinbürger, complaining how "of my life my sweetest dream - hangs here on an apple tree", but if you count in the fact it is still 19th. century (and pre-Bismarck era) it instantly becomes Harsher in Hindsight
