I hadn't heard of the character of Guybush Threepwood before, nor of his origin, but after checking I can see where troper sohibil was coming from when the Expy entry was added. There are certainly lots of interesting parallels and similarities. (thank you, sohibil!)

This sparked off a line of thought where it occurred to me that I'd seen Teena Keene in another comic strip but simply couldn't place her - then Peppermint Patty from "Peanuts" showed up, and all became clear. (at least to me)

And while the "Monkey Island" video game franchise dates back to 1990, which overlaps the production of the PT strip, would Allison B have necessarily been aware of this?

The problem is - I can see both Expies go a long way to ticking all the specified boxes (character appearance is pretty much identical, personalities are similar, in this context the Pre Teena comic strip could well be a Peanuts style set-up of the world as seen by children) but I'm not (after a frankly desultory at the moment Web search) finding any definite acknowledgement of this from the creator, any explicit statement that Allison B has, for instance, read "Peanuts" and was influenced by this.

so if any passing Moderator might want to express an opinion on this and cast a vote as to whether the Expy entry counts as valid, I'd quite welcome that.

Ah, paydirt. I've just discovered this, in which Allison Barrows is explicitly quoted as having greatly been influenced by Charles Schultz' Peanuts. The Peppermint Patty Expy is now definitively proven, I think.

See here for provenance.

Key line: "Allison's greatest comic strip influences have been "Peanuts," "B.C.," "Andy Capp," "Doonesbury," "Calvin and Hobbes" and the brilliant panel cartoonists in The New Yorker and Playboy."
