Wake is currently the first individual character with an entry in the Natural One-ders folder. Since Wake has been retired, I think it would be a good idea to move Wake to the bottom of the folder, since his entry won't change much and having to scroll past him is inconvenient for Readers and Editors
This entry is being edit warred over. To me it looks like a shoehorn - Expy is only for unambiguous cases, which such "hybrid" ones aren't.
- Expy: His demonic heritage and bond to a soul-stealing, evil sword evoke a certain Dante. On the other hand, his roguish womanizing and meandering English accent are more reminiscent of Jack Sparrow.
So... the same troper re-added basically the same entry, this time under Counterpart Comparison. Again with no attempt at discussion or even an edit reason.
I deleted it as Counterpart Comparison is a YMMV trope and doesn't belong on the Characters page.
This is a broader issue than just this page, but this isn't the first time I've seen Counterpart Comparison used as "Expy, but without the standards." I'm not sure "any character reminds anyone in the audience of any other character in any way shape or form" is a tropable concept, even as a YMMV Audience Reaction.
I don't know how the "hybridization" applies to the trope, but there's no ambiguity in place when the character's portrait is shown and one of the other players immediately calls him Dante. Dagon is definitely an expy of Dante, though the connection to Jack Sparrow is more tenuous.
An Expy is not "a character who reminds the audience of another character in some way, shape, or form." It's "an unambiguous and deliberate copy of another character."
This is discussed in more detail in the Expy Cleanup Thread on the forums, but the key word here is "copy."
Dagon may resemble Dante, even strongly, but he's not a copy of him. From the above thread:
- Superficial traits (like a hairstyle, choice in clothing, preferred fighting method) are not sufficient to make an expy; the copy needs to also fill the same role in the work and serve the same purpose within the story.
- Major traits or characteristics being very different between the two characters is enough to make a character not an expy (for instance, the original is a demure Girl Next Door, the proposed Expy is a Femme Fatale — not an expy).
Is it relevant that the player's call out the similarities to Dante?
Removed from main page, as there is a cleanup effort underway and I am not sure what to do with this entry:
- Mediator: Riel states that he runs a sect that helps balance people physically and emotionally. His personality is also quite calm and measured.
