Zangief's ambiguous sexuality isn't quite so ambiguous with this old quote I found.

In Street Fighter Alpha 3 Zangief referred to Ingrid as a cutie so he definitely isn't strictly gay: https://streetfighter.fandom.com/wiki/Zangief/Quotes#Street_Fighter_Alpha_3

https://youtu.be/LQb7UKRwvb4?t=2h13m34s

With this new information I suggest that Zangief either gets labeled as ambiguously bi or we just remove the ambiguity entirely since we have no strong evidence of his sexuality.

Hi there. Even with the above information in mind, there are still contrasting examples, and there is an argument to be made that he’s queer-coded from the Japanese perspective (as a large, proud, body-builder type). I don’t particularly mind either way - but as I say, this is a tropable element of the character that’s been a topic point for years (“ambiguous” covers the uncertainty). As you’ve triggered an ‘edit war’ on this topic, please don’t change anything further without consensus from other tropers. 👍🏻

An Ask the Tropers thread was made about this here just for the record.

I'll copy and paste my comment from that Ask thread: I'm not very deep on the Street Fighter lore, but up until this year, it's been stated that Zangief's early days had him not involved with women as he viewed them as a distraction from his duties and his goals. That all changed when he met R. Mika and since that meeting, he's worked with women on-and-off and battled others in and outside pro wrestling.

In regards to Ingrid in Alpha 3, this is one of those strange cases where Ingrid is locked in legal limbo due to copyright uncertainty (Ingrid isn't the only Capcom character to suffer this) so Ingrid's inclusion can be anywhere from non-canon/guest fighter to actual canon. Until Capcom is able to dispel this uncertainty, we can't treat Zangief's interest of Ingrid as proof of anything.

We just don't have any sufficient proof of Zangief's preferences one way or the other and trying to say so without this proof is Fan Myopia.

Hey. I think the reason he was initially ascribed this trope was because of a variety of contrary comments and signals. I’m absolutely happy for it to be left out if it’s contentious 👍🏻

I feel that the “has a type” trope had to be removed from Chun-Li’s profile cuz it has no canonical relevance. Cuz MVC isn’t canon to Street Fighter. And that statement she makes after beating Thor was clearly a joke or sarcastic remark. She wasn’t serious. And if you read her dialogue in all the games she is in, this is what she is known to do. So she wasn’t being serious. And this statement is only used in MVC 3 and is never used again in MVC Infinite nor did she ever say it in the previous MVC games let alone any dialogue alluding to that. Plus canonically, she has never shown any interest in any kind of man. Which is why she prefers to live the single life. Because she’s not interested in dating nor is she ever interested in settling down. It’s just not the way her character is written. The developers at Capcom wanted it to be this way because she symbolizes a strong independent woman who doesn’t need a man in her life. And considering how her story officially ends canonically in Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, she’s now living a life to where she can’t afford to settle down as she is now living the full life of an orphan caretaker and martial arts teacher and master. This kind of lifestyle demands her full attention and dating or having a relationship would interfere with that. But regardless, she is clearly shown to be not interested in dating let alone ever shown any interest in men. So that statement is taken out of context. It was clearly sarcasm as she is know to use. Please stick to only canon facts about Chun-Li. Thank you.

This kind of lifestyle demands her full attention and dating or having a relationship would interfere with that. But regardless, she is clearly shown not interested in dating.

That in itself is a lot of non-canon speculation.

I don't disagree with your point (that we shouldn't add speculation about Chun-Li's romantic preferences or dating life), but we don't need to justify those arguments with speculations about what her lifestyle allows her to pay attention to or would interfere with.

I'm also questioning where you got the information that Capcom stated that she symbolizes an independent woman who doesn't need a man. I don't doubt that some dev or designer said that once, somewhere, at some time, but what's the source on that?

EDIT: Also, if the quote wasn't from the MVC franchise, I would have had an issue with you deleting it based on your insinuation that Having a Type = Interest in Dating. That's not what it means. You can have a type of person you find attractive or interesting, but still have no interest in actually dating. If Chun-Li told someone "You're my kind of guy", then she Has a Type. That would justify the trope.

But as I said, since it was Marvel, it doesn't matter.

It’s not non-canon speculation. In SF 3, she becomes a martial arts teacher and raises orphan children. Her life is focused on that. That’s her official canon conclusion to her character.

I tried to add Hartman Hips under Chun Li a few times and I keep getting an error. This doesn't happen on any other page, what's that about?

This page is starting to get too long. Would it be okay to move characters who weren't in the original version to Characters.Street Fighter II Expansions?

Such a move seems fairly uncontroversial (although looking at other wikis it seems people call stuff like Super "Updated Versions", so Characters.Street Fighter II Updated Versions is a better idea). Anyway, I'll do it now.

Bringing this example to the Discussion:

  • Foreign Fanservice: As a Brit, she was the first non-Asian female in the series, and possesses the blonde hair and blue eyes expected of this trope. Even now, her and Rose are pretty much the only Caucasian women in the series — most of the series' females are Japanese, even if some of them (Karin, Mika, Maki) certainly don't look it.

The part after the first paragraph was recently added, and doesn't really add anything to it, despite the editors claims that it does. No one cares how many women in the series are Caucasian. (And even that isn't true, because Poison is Caucasian and at least identifies as a woman.)

So the "blonde-haired, blue-eyed white woman" isn't Foreign Fanservice, it's describing Phenotype Stereotype.

That part can be both. Caucasian phenotypes can contribute to the "exotic" requirements of Foreign Fanservice.

It's the part that comes after which really concerns me.

My point was that there's nothing about Fanservice in that writeup, foreign or otherwise. And yes, the rest of the writeup doesn't really add anything one way or the other. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to mention that she's the only example of Foreign Fanservice in the games, though.

So, is TV Tropes trying to redeem Akuma somehow again?

Is there a trope we can use for Balrog besides Unskilled, but Strong because I'm not sure that fits. Balrog's punches aren't like Birdie's or Miguel's, they're thrown properly and he has a wide variety of them. He has all the jabs, hooks, straights, and uppercuts that you would expect from a professional boxer and at least half of his strategy in the games revolves around his strong defense. He focuses on hard-punching but it's pretty clear that he's put a lot of practice into doing that. Ryu's criticisms of Balrog in the Udon comics are also problems that all boxers have when facing other martial artists (lack of lower body training, overcommitment on big punches) rather than problems specific to Balrog.

Balrog may be a greedy moron but he is not an unskilled fighter. Just compare his punches to strikes from guys like Q or Birdie if you need to know why.

Akuma's eyes appear to be Monochromatic Eyes because they're glowing red, but he's been shown to have Black Eyes of Crazy in both his artwork and in several games. I've included that.

Under Dhalsim's entry, I'm confused as to the Bishōnen reference. Although his entry states the trope Ugly Guy, Hot Wife and says he's not exactly a Bishōnen (which he isn't), it then goes on to say he's very skinny...umm, isn't that a requirement of Bishōnen characters? Also, Dhalsim has a lot more muscle than most Bishōnen characters... And speaking of, is Vega really a Bishōnen? His face might be, but he's buff...then again, everyone in Street Fighter seems to be ripped (okay, other than Remy)...so is he one in relative terms to the rest of the cast?

While he's slim, and being slim is a bishonen requirement, Dhalsim's case ends up coming off more as... shrunken, than healty. While you might have his SF IV incarnation in mind (and this game in particular buffed everyone up to ridiculous heights), for the most part of his "carreer" he looked more like this. That's his ribcage showing. O_o Definitely not bishie-looking.
