Noting the example in question here:
- Pirate Parrot: Ishiza's a hawk, actually, but the colors make for a pretty clear reference to this even if he never actually assumes the Parrot Pet Position (most likely due to engine constraints).
We're in a pirate setting, on a pirate ship (or a ship that is constantly beset by pirates, if you want to quibble). It's a brightly colored bird owned by a sailor. There are enough examples on the Pirate Parrot page of characters who are gangsters rather than pirates, or ship captains but not pirates, or who have birds as pets but not birds that can talk, that I think the trope is broader than you're assuming.
Edited by UnsungI'll also point to the trope description
The parrot may or may not:
- Be named "Polly".
- Ask for crackers, "Polly wants a cracker, Polly wants a cracker".
- Say something about "pieces of eight" (a Spanish dollar or piastre — a large silver coin worth eight reals).
Nothing here applies. Maia is not a Pirate, captain or otherwise. Ishiza displays none of the traits
Heck, Maia being a sailor is incidental: She's a Ranger and Sniper Foremost. She's a sailor the same way Xoti is a sailor - they happen to be working with a guy who uses a boat.
That misuse already exists doesn't make further misuse allowed.
Edited by GhilzTropes Are Flexible. I don't think the trope is being diluted — I don't think much purpose would be served in having a separate trope page for every permutation of pirate/sailor/criminal and parrot/monkey/psychic slug thing that might exist. I think it's the description that's faulty.
Then take it to TRS if you think it's faulty, don't add examples that don't fit the definition.
It's a parrot-colored bird in a pirate-themed game. I don't really know what's so controversial about it.
Is the game about pirates or not? Because Unsung is saying it is, Ghilz is saying it isn't, and the description on the main page doesn't indicate anything pirate-y (the word pirate is only on said page three times).
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Misread, my mistake. Every mention of the Principi is a reference to a league of pirates who are one of the four main factions, and I do think enough time is spent fighting pirates or pirating/privateering yourself that Ishiza's coloration isn't a coincidence.

Pirate Parrot: It's not an example. There's literally 0 hallmarks of the trope
Literally, it's diluting the trope to "Anyone who happens to own a colourful bird". Heck, Jafar and Iago from Aladdin check more boxes than Maia and Ishiza do since Iago is both a parrot, perches on how owner's shoulder & talks.
