Admittedly, I'm the one who added Lucky Star, but honestly, Madoka? Digimon? Evangelion? Kodomo no Jikan is even said to have had a successful translation campaign from Kickstarter, but its subject matter is still alienating to many by definition.
This trope isn't about a work's actual success or failure. It can be wildly successful despite striking out on many for its subject matter.
