Because fat tends to be considered unattractive by a large majority of people, ESPECIALLY the media (leading to \\\"WhatDoesSheSeeInHim\\\" in either case, but especially if the man is overweight). Most \\\"plus size models\\\" are hardly fat either. Most fat guys would easily fit the trope -- it\\\'s also much easier to argue that someone at Jim Belushi\\\'s weight would be out of Courtney Thorne-Smith\\\'s league. Getting into the exact variations of \\\"Ugly\\\" is already enough of a problem regarding semantics, thank you very much. We add \\\"Fat Guy\\\" then people will be arguing about the variations of THAT, too. It\\\'s far simpler and more efficient to pile that all under \\\"Ugly Guy\\\" (since being overweight = ugly to most people). You can make Fat Guy, Hot Wife if you want to, however. No one\\\'s stopping you.

Note also that part of the trope is the inherent sexism- a woman of comparable size to Seth Rogen is almost NEVER dating a handsome guy in the media- to the point that it becomes a major talking-point of the work in question when it DOES happen. The implicit idea is that men can let themselves go physically (in the face AND the body), but women are not allowed to.
