The general consensus I see is a preference for them to be outright playable characters rather than {{assist character}}s. That said, they were indeed well received.

Should this trope be restricted to networks smugglgin good guys? \'\'Literature/TheHardyBoys\', \'\'Franchise/TheScoobyDooShow\'\', \'\'Series/BreakingBad\'\' and possibly other works have featured criminals who operate a bit like the Underground Railroad, smuggling criminals out of the authorities reach. Plus, there are the rat lines that smuggled Nazis out of the Allies reach in World War II, and occasionally show up in movies about the war. They feel like they meet all of the qualifications besides being bad guys but I\'m not sure if it\'s respectful to this trope to make it apply for villains.
