The Pokemon Company have not said directly that these new versions are \"third versions\" of Sun & Moon, but have subtly hinted at it as an alternate retelling of Sun & Moon.

At the bottom of [[http://www.pokemon-sunmoon.com/ultra/en-us/alola-region.html this page]], it says the main playable characters are the same characters from Sun & Moon, but have to pick their partners to go on this new adventure in Ultra Sun & Moon. If Ultra Sun and Moon had been sequels instead, the main player characters wouldn\'t need to pick their partners, they\'d still have their fully evolved chosen starters and [[spoiler:be the champion from Sun & Moon]].

All-in-all, this is like what Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to Super Mario Galaxy 1. Ultra Sun & Moon pretends the original Sun & Moon doesn\'t exist due to Ultra Sun & Moon being set in an alternate universe.
