As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openAdd unread badges to Followed Pages.
Please do the same as in Followed Threads and add checkmarks to unread pages, with this color scheme it's impossible to tell.
Alternatively use a more contrasting color scheme.
openFix the search engine
The internal search engine used to work fine, but ever since the most recent update, it's been complete garbage. It literally works better to use a general search engine to find a TV Tropes thread. It used to be that "Search Forums" would only bring up results from within Thread titles, but now it exclusively searches within the text of posts, not in the Thread titles at all. If you search "Social Media", you won't find The Social Media Thread anywhere, just every single instance of anyone saying the words "social media" in a post.
If it has to include the functionality of searching within the text of the page, it should at least prioritize the thread titles first (eliminating any doubles), then bring up threads with that text on the page.
Edited by PushoverMediaCriticopenCut reasons for unlaunched tropes
For unlaunched tropes, whether premature or rogue launched tropes, there should be a cut reason on why and a link for the draft.
One reason I have is that it could be signified as an unlaunched trope and could easily be dewicked on time.
openPlease Disable Your Text Replacement Plugin
I've seen some tropers get suspended for using a text replacement plugin, most of which are swear filters and drumpf's. So, in order to prevent that, I had an idea that popped up from an inspiration from Anti-Adblock popups. It goes:
I have disabled this plugin | I have added tvtropes.org to the whitelist
I was thinking that it would be a pop up when you're editing a page. Edited by alnair20aug93
openChange "Poor Image" to "Poor Image Quality" in IP thread reasons.
"Poor Image" refers to a currently existing image's quality, but I've seen several threads that are about images needing quality upgrades that have the "NSFW/Image Macro", "Suggestion", or "Needs Help" option selected instead.
I think changing the option to "Poor Image Quality" would prevent that.
openContributor's Edit History and Forum Activity
Somehow, a troper's edit history can only go as far, with only edits from the past week or month if a troper is very active; same goes for forum and discussion activities.
So, my wishlist is for the edit history to go all the way to their very first edits (from upon joining the wiki to now).
openAdd comment field to Custom WikiWord Requests
I often feel it would be helpful for the mod if users could provide context for why they want to add or change a custom Wikiword title. For example, I may want to change Zero-Approval Gambit to 0% Approval Gambit and let the mod know that it's because it would better align with 0% Approval Rating. Or I want to provide a link to an official source.
It could look something like this:

openClearer rejection messages for videos
I've had a video example denied several times (although most of mine get accepted), but when it does get rejected, I get a very short message like "not interesting" or "entire work".
It took me ages to figure out that "entire" can apply to instalments and not just the literal whole work, and that "not interesting" actually means something along the lines of "there's nothing moving; it's just music."
And I was thinking that, since notifiers have predefined messages that explain clearly what the problem is, why not rejection messages for videos? Examples of potential messages:
- Sorry, but it appears that this video is either a whole work, or an entire instalment of a work. We do not allow this because of copyright issues. Please only submit part of the work/instalment.
- The video you submitted contained inappropriate imagery. We don't allow [list of prohibited things].
- This appears to be audio-only. We don't allow video examples with no movement, even for tropes about sounds or music, because some people don't find audio-only videos very interesting.
openAdd an automated note on a page when it is added to cutlist
Similar to the "candidate for deletion" notice on some Fandom wiki. Adding an article to a cutlist could put an automated notice on the top saying "This article has been slated for the cutlist. Reason: [insert reason here]"
This could alert those following the page to make any changes that could prevent cutlisting, like expanding a stub article. It would also increase transparency and help people catch on to preemptive cutlisting more easily.
Edited by mightymewtronopenNotice about new rules on Tropes
I would like for some kind of "Trope News" thing for when changes are made to a trope that defines how it should be used. While I've been on TVT, there have been several tropes that have undergone changes such as rules, cuts, etc. For examples: Broken Base adding a requirement of a six-month period for an example to be used, He Really Can Act being sent to the Sugar Wiki, and Dude, Not Funny! and Mean Character, Nice Actor being made into in-universe-only tropes. Usually once these changes are made there's a period where cleanup is made all the more difficult due to people being unaware of these changes. (In particular Broken Base still has people unaware of the six-month wait.) I know something like this wouldn't completely solve the problem, but I think it would help to a degree.
Edited by iamconstantineopenMake It So That Awesome Music Subpages Have The Sugar Wiki Color Scheme
Awesome Music, much like Moment of Awesome, Funny Moments, and Heartwarming Moments, are prominent Sugar Wiki subpages on this wiki, but unlike the latter three, Awesome Music doesn't have the pink and brown color scheme. I really wish that we could change this.
openAbolish comment markup within a line (the "between two percent signs" feature)
It offers practically no benefit over the line comments (which are introduced by two percent signs with nothing in-between) and only the drawback of killing links that contain escaped nonstandard characters.
Please remove this syntax from the wiki (and forum) code and only support the line comments from here on.
Edit: Bugs entry for the percent-encoding bug.
Edited by Medinocopenicons for translation namespaces
Would it be possible to make little icons for the namespace list for the foreign language pages? Like a little Spanish flag next to "Es", French next to "Fr", German next to "De", for example?
openResponse code for cut pages
Cut pages should return 404 (Not Found) or 410 (Gone) instead of 200 (OK) to discourage search engines from indexing them.
openAllow us to choose how far back a page's history goes by default
As-is, clicking on a page's History icon brings up the last 15 edits. That's great, and for a lot of people more than sufficient, but it would be great if we could adjust how far back the default History page goes, that would be fantastic for, say, people going into the history to do cleanup of a ban-evader or some racist nutter who went under the radar for years.
openBring back the TRS/Image Pickin' icons on wiki pages
Before the update, wiki pages that had active Trope Repair Shop or Image Pickin' discussions on them would have a flag at the top with an icon and link to the forum thread in question. This was helpful for navigating back and forth between the two and for getting wiki readers involved in the forums/trope repair (it's how I got involved in the forums). It also seems like it might prevent people from uploading their own images while an image thread is going on, or from posting redundant Trope Talk/ATT comments about tropes with issues. These disappeared in the June update; are there any plans to bring them back?
openVisual Novels do not show up on sub-pages header
If a work has too many sub-pages, the twenty or so most important will show up in boxes at the top with a drop-down menu for the rest. The main work page itself will always show up among them for most mediums... but not for visual novels. See Doki Doki Literature Club! for example, the main work page is in the drop-down. Could we make all mediums appear at the top by default?
On the same note, could the main work page appear first instead of being lost among the boxes? It is the most important after all.
openA way to find if your posts on YKTS were answered
like a search engine or a followed questions option because searching a question usually gets the search drowned on results from other people.
Copying what I've said in "Ask The Tropers" here, I think we should add Toys to the filters for "Ask The Tropers", "Trope Finder", and "You Know That Show...", as well as give them a their own subsection under "Media" in the Forums. I mean, we have pages for Toys and Toys get their own folders on some Trope pages, so I don't see why they shouldn't have these.
