What about something more specific? Like in a coming of age story where a kid is pressured to be in a certain sport because the family has always been in that sport, only to be in a different sport or activity all together.
If an event is set up to happen, but doesn't, then it's simply a Subverted Trope. If it's Played for Laughs, it's a Bait-and-Switch.
Whatever it was you were trying to say, you gave a very poor example - I'm still not sure I understand.
I've been looking without success for a trope like this: when a character seems set up to be placed in a certain group but gets placed in another one. Sorta What Could Have Been. To use an example, like if Hermonie Granger had been placed in Ravenclaw, or if one one of the Weaslys got placed in Hufflepuff.
