The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
^ Not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a trope where giving a name grants a person power, not the act of naming in general.
It's basically Nominal Importance. Given how in-your-face it seems to be, maybe it qualifies as a Lampshade Hanging or Invoked Trope ("I name all my pets as soon as possible for the power boost!"), possibly even Parodied Trope if it's particularly silly (common rat gets named, suddenly starts performing calculus).
Edited by KDNominal Importance is the one. Thanks.
In Lazy Dungeon Master, the very act of naming a monster grants them something. Even the lowliest rats become more intelligent upon receiving a name. More powerful monsters that have sapience to begin with are also excited to get a name as it makes them unique.
What trope is this?
