Engineer & mod discussion thread

This is a thread engineers can use to communicate with moderation and ask questions about the following engineer duties:

• TLP management.
• Video example management.
• TRS/IP Crowner management.
• Pinning headers and editing thread titles for TRS/IP.
• Editing locked pages.
• Moving pages via page mover tool.
• Create pages in main.
• Move discussion pages

The primary reason why the engineer feature was pushed up was that the admins want the videos to be processed faster so videos approval should be top priority. You guys are free to work on other parts of the site but please try to work on the videos regularly.

Policy notes

• Engineers can unlock TRS threads, but must not unlock Content Violation Discussion threads (as the moderators need to be directly involved in The Content Policy work).
• This thread is visible to all users, as the contents are not confidential. However, only mods and engineers are able to post in it.

Thought the videos backlog was in hundreds, but there are like only 16 pending. Will try to see later if any have issues with Video Guidelines.

I've located each of the functions. Would rather not touch anything until asked, but I'll see if I can get used to it.

Where would be a good place to discuss specific videos?

Shouldn't this thread be private?

I ran through some of the older videos earlier and reduced it to the page we currently have. I was glad to see the "rejection reason" box for one of them, though it's surprising to me that we can't see the reasons other videos were rejected (I'd only checked out of curiosity but it would be useful if questions ever pop up).

I can add that to the list of changes when I get to videos. The ability to see previous rejection reasons.

Also, the mods said engineering tasks can be public. But if you both think it would be better private you can make a case for it and if the mods agree I can make it only viewable to you and them.

I think questions between mods and engineer are for their eyes only, so concerns about engineers is best for own thread, or the private chat needs own thread.

Anyway, I'll share what I think of the currently pending videos for someone else to verify if my judgement is correct before I do anything. I don't think it's too much of a secret.

That one seems like it can be moved without input - my only concern is whether the tool still leaves ghost wicks behind.

I'll run through the videos you mentioned in a bit; I had a few I was on the fence on when approving last night, but I'd gone ahead and approved all but the one I knew for a fact didn't fit the trope.

No objections from me to your rationale for each /. For spoilers — might be prudent to reject it with that reasoning. The troper will be able to respond to you by PM.

~Amonimus: I agree with your rationales except for:

• "I love words!" - I don't see the pun there unless I'm overlooking something.
• "Zaith'isk" - I could go either way on this one, although it does seem to be leaning on the dialogue a little too much.

The ones that don't have a description can be denied right away with that as the reason.

I didn't realize descriptions were necessary; I let a few slip by but can go back and reject them if I need to.

I can.

• On Videos, are you able to see "Denied Videos" in the dropdown menu?
• If you go here, are you able to see a denied video near the top of the list?
• If yes to the previous: are you able to click that video's gear icon to open the edit window and see the listed Denial Reason and Denial Explanation?

The page mover tool still leaves ghost wicks.

As Amonimus notes here, "[page capitalization] fixes involve cutting, which engineers have no access to." Trying to fix page capitalization without the page-cutting step results in a partially fixed page; it appears fixed on the page itself, but the watchlist still shows the old capitalization, and if you try to submit a custom title, it'll be tied to the old capitalization.

It's something we were discussing changing recently and agreed on, but haven't formalized yet. The idea is that video submissions should explain how the attached trope(s) fit (whether in the description or some other field(s) to be added later) to make it easier for us to manage the video queue, similar to the requirement in the Video moderation requests thread that "If you want a trope added or removed from a video, please explain how the video fits/doesn't fit the trope or link to other discussions supporting your proposal."

Some video editing tips that come to mind:

• If you try to remove multiple sources/secondary tropes from a video at once, only one will be properly removed. The others will be removed from the viewing window, but will still be on the editing window, and the video will still be listed for them. To remove multiple sources/secondary tropes from a video, you'll have to remove them one at a time, saving after each one.
• If for some reason, you click the denial button before you're ready to send a denial reason, you can just close the denial reason box, then click the denial button again when you're ready to reopen the denial reason box, even if the video is already set to denied. The denial PM won't send until you press submit on the denial reason box.
  The fact that you can click the denial button of an already-denied video to open the denial reason box^note note that it won't show you any previously submitted denial reason; it's only for letting you submit a new one. the current/most recent denial reason is displayed in the video editing window. also comes in handy if you accidentally close the denial reason box before submitting the denial reason.

Also, when someone responds to video denial, there's no way of knowing which one since all messages have the same subject.

Also TLP management means only unlaunches.

Looks like I can open locked pages, but the edits don't save.

Ah I’ll look at the code and see. We wanted the engineers to be able to edit locked pages but not unlock them?

Okay, I approved some of the videos in the queue but I'm having trouble getting them to play without multiple refreshes and attempts at a time (they're just coming up as 00:00, or they get set to the time of the previous video I just watched, both of which require me to try again until they finally work correctly). I can try again later, but right now It's really a slog.

I don't have that issue. Well, I see the video time is the one of the previous video I've watched, but it refreshes in a second when the video loads.
