Zuxtron Berserk Button: misusing Nightmare Fuel from Node 03 (On A Trope Odyssey)
#151: Jan 30th 2023 at 2:42:49 PM

I am once again bringing up YMMV.My Hero Academia here. Jet 200 just added a large number of examples, but then agreed that they should be cut after I messaged them. On closer inspection, however, I feel like all of the examples are lacking context.

  • Signature Scene:
    • Midoriya breaking down crying as All Might tells him the one thing he's always wanted to hear: "You can be a hero".
    • Midoriya using One For All to destroy the Zero Point Robot.
    • All Might's battle with Nomu at USJ, especially the anime version, which expanded the fight from a mere slugfest into a brawl that sent them crashing all throughout the complex and had "You Say Run" blaring the whole time.
    • Midoriya and Todoroki's battle in the U.A. Sports Festival with Midoriya finally getting Todoroki to use his fire Quirk.
    • The finale to the fight between Midoriya and Iida vs Stain, particularly the moment when they punch the villain at the same moment.
    • Shigaraki's face with Slasher Smile and The Un-Smile during his encounter with Midoriya, deservedly being as main page's image for series's Nightmare Fuel.
    • The finale to the fight between Deku and Muscular, particularly the "My Hero" capping it off.
    • All Might's "United States of Smash!!!" during his fight with All For One, followed by "You're next."
    • Deku, with help from Eri, fighting Overhaul with One For All at its full power.
    • Entire Class 1-A's music performence on School Festival, especially in the anime with Hero Too song performed by Chrisy Costanza as Jiro. We also get to see Eri's first smile on-screen, literally breaking out of the darkness her heart had been mired in.
    • Endeavor using his ultimate move Prominence Burn on Hood Nomu in the sky, followed up Enji's raising his arm to claim victory in the aftermath, just like All Might.
    • Deku's activating his new quirk "Blackwhip" by accident during final part of Joint Training Battle.
    • Twice's performing "Sad Man's Parade for the first time after realizing he's actual the original and not the clone.
    • In the flashback, Shigaraki as young Tenko Shimura accidentally killing his family and his dad on purpose Patricide with Slasher Smile, manifesting his quirk at the worst possible moment.
    • Dabi's dance with his Motive Rant against his father Endeavor for abandoning him in the past.

Although I'm a fan of the series, I'm not sure if I can pick any specific scene as the most iconic moment. I'm tempted to just cut the whole thing for now.

that was recently added on live action subpage. Not sure if anything is salvageable.

  • The Twilight Zone
    • William Shatner viewing the Gremlin on the wing of the Airplane.
    • The lead character in one episode, a bookworm constantly abused by everyone around him, surviving a nuclear holocaust, leaving him free to finally read his books in peace, only to break his reading glasses, just when he had "Time Enough At Last".
    • The ending of "The Monsters are Due on Mulberry Street" in which the neighborhoods chaos is a plot by Aliens planning to turn humanity against itself to make their invasion easier.
    • Robert Redford revealed to be the handsome face of death, to gently ease the frightened elderly woman he had been speaking to so kindly, onto the other side.
    • The Dramatic Unmask of the bandaged patient face, revealing that of a stunningly beautiful woman to the audience, yet to the Pig-People of the alternate reality which the episode is set in, is hideously ugly to them, a reminder that beauty is in "The Eye of The Beholder".
    • "Mr. Chambers, don't get on that ship! To Serve Man! It's a... IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!"

[up] The Gremlin is the closest I can think of to a Signature Scene from that work. Since there seems to be only one Signature Scene per work, I'm not so sure there's anything salvageable either—The Twilight Zone has so many iconic scenes that there isn't really one.

Here's an idea—maybe the individual scenes can be listed on their episode recap YMMV pages? As in, the signature scene of that episode?

From Licence to Kill:

  • Signature Scene: Felix's torture, the tanker chase, and Krest's notorious death scene would probably count as such.

I think out of these three the tanker chase is the one to keep. It provides the page image for Car Skiing after all.

I've seen several Signature Scene examples removed stating it is supposed to be scenes so iconic that even those who haven't seen the work would recognize them.

Does/should SS have such a strict requirement ? Audience-Alienating Ending had such a requirement but that was so unworkable it was removed.

That would be my doing, since I've been performing wiki checks to find potential misuse. I would like to point out that I did this in accordance to the following paragraph: "Remember that this should not just be a list of every single dramatic or important scene (those fall under Wham Episode or Shocking Moments.) This is the one scene that's so iconic that even people who've never seen the work likely recognize it." The deleted examples described scenes that, while popular among fans of the work, failed to leave a mark in the broader pop culture. As the trope page itself states, for an example to be valid, the scene must be "cemented in the minds of the general public".

Ehhh... that seems so rare and specific that I would much rather just go to TRS and remove that rule than uphold it like gospel. It reminds me of the old "any person on the street" rule Condemned by History had to follow, and we changed that.

I might've brought it up before here, but in case I haven't, do any of the video examples actually show the recognizability of the scene with the fanbase? I'm concerned we have the same issue that Memetic Mutation used to have before its video examples got purged.

I really don't think that it should be that strict. Sure, if someone who has never seen the work can recognize the scene, that is a good clue that it might be a signature scene, but it shouldn't actually be a requirement.

[up]I'd [tup] dropping that requirement as unworkably strict. But if we remove that how do we define/keep examples objective enough to count? Just require explaining why it is (one of) the most remembered/talked about moments in the work?

And if just that as to most iconic, how do we define too many examples to be valid?

SignatureScene. One Piece exists citing "One Piece is a very long series, therefore it has a lots of iconic scenes."

    The Examples

  • Gold Roger's execution, especially since his last words are what instigate the plot.
  • Shanks losing an arm, and passing down his straw hat to Luffy is easily a cover shot for the series.
    • Nami's breakdown leading her to finally ask Luffy for help to defeat Arlong, and the subsequent Power Walk to Arlong Park, the latter moreso in the animated adaptation. Doesn't explain why.
  • The crew departing from Alabasta, holding their arms up with the X mark towards Vivi. Doesn't explain why.
  • Blackbeard's speech about how the dreams of pirates will never die to Luffy, Nami and Zoro, after Luffy and Zoro were beaten up in a bar fight. Doesn't explain why.
  • Luffy's Gear Second pose. Doesn't explain why.
  • Robin's declaring to the rest of the crew she wants to live, at Enies Lobby, after Luffy declares war on the rest of the world for her sake. Doesn't explain why.
  • Going Merry's funeral, the crew watching the ship burn as to remember their adventures with her. Doesn't explain why.
  • Zoro standing tall, his body completely destroyed after fighting Ryuma, Oars with Moria, Kuma, and then taking all of Luffy's damage taken from all his previous battles, simply claiming afterward that "nothing happened". Doesn't explain why.
  • Ace tearfully dying in Luffy's arms at Marineford. It's the first major unambiguous death scene outside of flashbacks in a story somewhat infamous for Disney Deaths.
  • Whitebeard confirming the existence of One Piece before dying on his feet. Doesn't explain why. Might be reworkable.
  • Luffy's first Gear Fourth transformation, and the defeat of Donquixote Doflamingo with the King Kong Gun. Doesn't explain why.
  • Luffy's and Katakuri's final blow, which is illustrated in the cover of Volume 89 as well.
  • Pudding kissing Sanji in the last chapter of Wholecake Island, before erasing his memory and letting him leave without her. Doesn't explain why.
  • Roger's laugh upon finding Joy Boy's treasure has quickly become one of the most famous and referenced panels of the manga.
  • Luffy laughing his ass off as his fruit (which is simultaneously revealed to be a Mythical Zoan based on the secret Sun God Nika) Awakens to Gear 5th. It's also depicted on the cover of Volume 104, and in-universe, becomes his bounty picture by the end of the Wano arc.

That's 10/17 examples failing to give adequate context. Would 7 examplesbe enough to warrant keeping the page if the misuse as written are cut?

And again, for works so long running they warrant more Signatures than one-shot works, how do we determine how many? (X per arc? Per years/seasons arcs running?)

RRR (2022) has these examples which don't really explain why they count as Signature Scenes:

  • Signature Scene: While the trailers spoil a few of them, it doesn't reduce the impact due to the movie adding much needed context:
    • The end of the bridge rescue, where Ram and Bheem just manage to grab each other by the same hand, ending the chaos and serving as their victory dance. This one's even turned into a logo for the movie.
    • The Dance-Off where Bheem and Ram school the racist British dancers, a scene which won the film an Academy Award.
    • The moment the truck skids into the Buxtons' party and releases about two dozen wild animals already baying for blood, and leaping for the kill. Including herbivores for some reason.note
    • Ram and Bheem in the jungle, with bow and spear, leaping into the fray side by side as the climax starts.

The first two examples provide some context - i.e, the first one is in the logo, and the second one is associated with an Oscar winning number. I'd keep either one of those two moments

TheChosenTVSeries has a very large number of signature scenes listed, I'm not familiar with it but it would be great if someone who is could clarify which ones should be kept.

I stumbled across YMMV.Calvin Harris and noticed that it has 14 Signature Songs listed. It seems that people are interpreting "Signature Song" as "any popular song by this artist" or confusing it with Awesome Music.

Of these, I feel like "We Found Love" and "Summer" make the best arguments for keeping them.

TantaMonty Since: Aug, 2017
#167: Jun 5th 2023 at 3:51:57 PM

[up] I agree with keeping those two. The other examples completely miss the point of the trope, as they describe songs that are only well-known within specific groups, rather than the general public ("Pray to God", "This Is What You Came For"). That being said, I think "How Deep Is Your Love", "Slow Acid", "Outside", "Slide" and maybe "Blame" have enough context to be kept as examples of Awesome Music.

Question: Are youtube views of a scene in any piece of media a good measurement for a scene to count as a Signature Scene?

Because YMMV.The Legend Of Heroes Kuro No Kiseki has an entry about the scene of Judith's Wardrobe Malfunction and how a clip of it on youtube became the first Trails clip to gain 1,000,000 views. I'm admitlley a bit iffy on it because seen discussion of it at all in the Trails fandom, and I kinda doubt it would the first thing an outsider might think about when the hear about.

YMMV/Flashdance has multiple scenes that I don't think are signature:

  • Signature Scene:
    • Both the bucket and sweatshirt scenes have become Stock Parodies over the years.
    • The scenes with the two Signature Songs, both featuring Alex dancing in a black getup: a wild pratice scored by "Maniac", and the audition to "Flashdance... What a Feeling" where Alex incorporates all of the styles she's observed throughout in the film.
    • The Minor Character, Major Song "Manhunt" cabaret number, due to Cynthia Rhodes not needing a double (unlike the other dancers in it) and having some great moves for an original song.
    • Jeanie's ice-skating audition, due to the moves she employs and the Soundtrack Dissonance once she begins to falter tugging at the heartstrings.

The bucket is obviously the signature scene of the movie, but the example needs expanding. The sweatshirt scene also belongs, but that also needs expanding. I'd say the two signature song scenes could be listed here too (or at least the What a Feeling Scene), but it's not as iconic as the bucket. I'd say manhunt and the ice skating scenes are not signature scenes and can be cut, they are not that well known compared to the others.

[up][up] That sounds like it could be more to do with some kind of titillation trope than Signature Scene.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Apologies for the double-post, but I've just come across this entry:

YMMV.Justice League XRWBY Super Heroes And Huntsmen

  • Signature Scene: All scenes that involves Jaune and Jessica are loved by fans. But the one scene that stands out the most is the one where Jaune encourages and supports Jessica to break out from a sealed room which its walls closing in to squash them, with her reciting the Green Lantern oath as the icing on the cake.

This is a straight-to-Blu-Ray animated film that only came out on the 25th April. It seems that the Jaune/Jessica interactions were a big hit with people who watched the film, but this reads more like a fandom-specific Heartwarming entry than a Signature Scene entry about what people who haven't seen the film know.

Yeah, the reason it could have received so many views is because of fandom titillation. Or it could be for something else entirely. Overall, I'm agreeing with you that this seems likely to be a within-fandom reaction and not something that's being picked up outside the fandom.

YMMV.The Legend Of Heroes Trails Into Reverie has these badboys:

  • Signature Scene:
    • Unfortunately for Lloyd, the scene that's most talked about him is him getting curb stomped by Simulacrum Rufus in just two seconds in one hit.
    • For Rean, it's either the duel with him and fake Arios in chapter 3 or the entire Tyrfing S sequence at the climax of said chapter.
    • For C, it's Rufus' Zero Gambit Plan.

I never heard any of them until reading the page and most of these feel like in-fandom reactions. Any other thoughts?

[up]

  • That's Never Live It Down.
  • To quote the trope page: "(Signature Scene) is the one scene that's so iconic that even people who've never seen the work likely recognize it. (...) you shouldn't generally feel the urge to add more than one for a particular work yourself." Since the person who added that to the page can't decide which scene is a valid example, it's likely that neither of them count. That, and it's a Zero-Context Example.
  • Zero-Context Example. I'm not familiar with the work, so I can't comment on its validity, but if you think it's a misplaced Shocking Moments/Moment of Awesome/etc. entry, go ahead and delete it. Otherwise, hide it.
