Since this has been tossed around as a concept a few times, I figured we might as well make it.

Indexes on this wiki have a sad tendency to be misused or created with improper formatting. From tropes being on multiple redundant indices instead of just the "Sub-indices", to indentation issues within the indexes, to people using indexes as tropes or categorizing tropes beneath them in example lists- there's a couple things to be cleaning up here.

This may also make a good place to discuss indexes that have yet to be made, as well as pages that are/aren't indexing things when they shouldn't/should.

Stock "Yuck!" for some reason is sorted by categories of food, and depending on what country portrays what food as such, instead of the regular media-based example sorting.

I don't know if this belongs in here, so apologize if I've gone to the wrong thread.

[up] That's a soft-split. It's definitely a problem, but soft-splits can be taken care of in TRS (in lieu of a proper cleanup thread).

Bump.

So the thing that got me wanting to make this was noticing some tropes duplicated on Child Abuse Tropes and Abuse Tropes, which is pretty redundant.

Yeah, it does seem redundant.

I was considering this for a while.

Geometry Tropes looks a bit anemic. It should contain all geometry-related tropes, such as More than Three Dimensions (ditto) and Pivotal Boss (a common layout for boss levels) that don't belong on Shapes and Symbols Tropes.

Homophobia Index is a mess. Not only is there lots of trope overlap with Queer as Tropes, the index seems confused as to what it’s about. Some tropes are clearly about negative stereotypes or negative reactions towards LGBTQ characters In-Universe (All Gays Are Pedophiles, Creepy Crossdresser, Trans Relationship Troubles, etc), but other tropes are included on there just because “they have particular implications for LGBTI people”, even though they can be depicted positively or negatively (Gayborhood, Butch Lesbian, Drag Queen, etc).

Overall, the index seems like a mix of “objectively negative stereotypes/discrimination In-Universe” and “tropes that can carry Unfortunate Implications about LGBTQ people”.

[up][up] Maybe the UI-type tropes could be moved over to Unfortunate Implications with a citation?

Oh, so this is the place to talk about indexes, beyond the index finding thread...

Does Two Girls to a Team belong in Token Index? And more importantly to me... Is the number 1 / the idea of uniqueness, essential to the idea of a token?

I think this goes in here? Shout Out/ Western Animation is kind of a mess, you have proper indexing set up at the top, but at the bottom there's folders and an example list. Went there to index the Shout Out page for Transformers: Animated I just made, only to find a copy of the same text in that mess of folders. Going to clean that part up but help would be appreciated for the rest.

[up] The existence of the example list is valid; it's a subpage of the examples section of Shout-Out. Per Crosswicking, trope examples are listed both on the trope page and the work page, unless a work has enough examples of a trope to warrant a subpage dedicated specifically to that trope. In that case, that subpage would exist as a subpage to both the work page and the trope page, thus eliminating the need for example duplication.

Gender Dynamics Index is a confusing hybrid of an index and an Analysis page. Some of the folders are haphazardly subdivided by paragraphs of description and analysis, making it less readable and functional. The breaks in these paragraphs aren't all displaying (at least for me), which doesn't help.

Particularly bad example, there only 8 bulleted tropes amongst the waffle
One example of the Reactive dynamic for female characters is how emotional dynamics are portrayed in families in fiction. Often children (mostly male children) tend to the emotional needs of their mothers. This is usually portrayed as charming and sweet, rather than abusive and creepy. A specific example would be after a death in the family, after which children are portrayed as tiptoeing around and tending to the emotions of their mothers. Often, these mothers are labeled as pillars of strength for the family; however, they function in story more like emotional albatrosses. This despite the fact that a mother is necessarily older and more mature then her children (yes, even adult children), thus has had more time to develop the wisdom and emotional strength to guide her children through emotional trials.

Another example is how emotional reactions tend to be portrayed as more of the concern of female characters, particularly positive or empathetic emotions (as opposed to anger, hate, and jealousy). Female characters are often shown mediating disputes between male characters, offering solace to other characters caught in a reactive moment (where they are depressed or upset at something), and if a mook expresses concern over the morally dubious behavior of the Big Bad or his orders, almost invariably it will be a female mook (the lone female mook of a bad boss is always the one to bet on for a Heel–Face Turn; she is almost never depicted as relishing the evil she does). Rarely are male characters depicted offering each other an emotionally safe space as this might come across as uncomfortably effeminate or gay (the only exception seems to be war movies). This has the effect of making sympathetic emotions the domain of female characters, which somewhat ridiculous because all people have them and there is evidence that we can't think or make decisions without emotions and this includes the positive and sympathetic emotions. Essentially without them, far from being more effective, we are paralyzed with indecision.

In summary, the Reactive dynamic uses female character reaction as a shorthand way of illustrating how we should feel about setting, events, and characters in the story. Often these reactions are necessarily negative because without conflict there is no plot. This can start feeling somewhat misogynistic. Until audiences start consistently caring about events, settings, and characters negatively impacting on the reactive interior world of male characters, this dynamic is unlikely to change.

Should LGBT+ Creators mention both Freddie Mercury and Queen, when the former is only relevant by himself?

Would be nice if I could scrub both Queen mentions off the page for disambig ease, but probably not, since he was a member of the band.

I just stumbled upon Half-Hour Comedy, a page that does indexing. It seems quite redundant with Sitcom and its sub-indexes to me. Plus it has very few examples compared to the amount of half-hour comedies in existence; I'd add to it but I wonder if the page is even necessary in first place.

Related, I just discovered that two of Sitcom's subtypes (Roommate Com and Sit Comic) are not set to indexing, while the rest are. This should be consistent, right?

[up][up] In cases like this, I think just listing the individual is good enough, unless for example there are other members without a page that are LGBTQ+.

I have the same kind of issue with Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground being put in that index and Jewish Creators when Reed was the only one fitting either descriptor in the band.

Hate to double post, especially so soon, but I thought I'd bring to attention a reference of bloated pages to identify which indexes should be at least deprioritized. Feel free to add to it if you find another such case.

I saw that JustForFun.Statler And Waldorf is being used as an index, but honestly I don't think it should do that (nor should any JFF page), just because that gag gets used to close out the pages it lists.

[up] Agreed, de-indexing.

[up][up] I took a look at one of the pages, Anime.Yu Gi Oh, and it seems that much of the bloat is coming from listings on at least 15 Creator pages. Which ones should I cut?

Sorry for the double-post, but I discovered that the subpages of JustForFun.Trope Names For A Band is also indexed. Remove as well?

I'm taking a closer look at the contents of Homophobia Index at Sandbox.Homophobia Index Comparison; at the moment, it seems that there is a lot of general sexism and borderline Political Overcorrectness complaining regarding asexuality. So far, I've checked 33 out of 99 entries, focusing firstly on the 44 that are not in Queer as Tropes.

Why is Funny.Fan Works partially a duplicate of Funny.Fanfic?

Improbable Behavior Tropes needs double-checking that all of the items belong. I have already removed Chainmail Bikini and Stripperiffic (which are about improbable clothing) and Hilarity Ensues (which no longer exists). Should I also remove everything that is in a sub-index?
