Tropes on this page usually have to do with putting something into a show solely for one or both of two reasons: because some demographic (girls, non-white people, etc) wants to see it or to conveniently advance the narrative.


  • Affirmative Action Girl: A female character is added to the group to increase diversity.
  • A Cat in a Gang of Dogs: The only feline member in a group of canines.
  • Five-Token Band: Every member of the group is a minority not represented by the rest of the team.
  • Flawless Token: When the token character can do no wrong.
  • The One Guy: The one male member of a team otherwise composed of females.
  • Only Sane Man: A conventional and sane person in a group full of weirdos.
  • Same Race Means Related: The only way to have multiple characters of a minority is to have them be related.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The one female member of a team otherwise composed of males.
  • Starring Smurfette: The main character is a different gender from the supporting characters.
  • The Team Normal: The one member of a team of super-powered beings who lacks superpowers.
  • Team Pet: The one member of the team who is a domesticated animal rather than a sapient being.
  • Token Adult: The one member of a team who is an adult.
  • Token Aquatic Race: A work has a variety of sapient species, but only one lives underwater.
  • Token Competent Minion: The only one among the main villain's minions who is consistently competent.
  • Token Enemy Minority: The one member of the team who belongs to a species the group is usually against.
  • Token Evil Teammate: The one member of a heroic team who is evil.
  • Token Flyer: The one member of a team who can fly.
  • Token Good Cop: The only member of a police force who isn't corrupt or useless.
  • Token Good Teammate: The one member of a villainous team who is good.
  • Token Heroic Orc: The one member of an evil species who isn't evil.
  • Token Houseguest: One member of a family focused cast who isn't part of the immediate family.
  • Token Human: The only member of a group who is human.
  • Token Immortal: The sole member of a group that is immortal.
  • Token Lesbian: The only member of a group who is a lesbian.
  • Token Mini-Moe: The only member of the group who is a young girl.
  • Token Minority: The only member of the group who is a different ethnicity, gender, or age with the intent of making the cast more diverse.
  • Token Minority Couple: The only couple consisting of an ethnicity different from most characters.
  • Token Motivational Nemesis: The villain responsible for the hero's suffering who gets killed in the first arc.
  • Token Non-Human: The single non-human member of a group otherwise composed of humans.
  • Token Religious Teammate: The one member of the group who is explicitly shown to have religious beliefs.
  • Token Rich Student: The one kid at school who belongs to a wealthy family.
  • Token Robot: The only member of the team who is robotic.
  • Token Romance: A romantic subplot shoehorned into the main plot.
  • Token Super: The sole member of a team who has super powers.
  • Token Trio: A trio composed of a white male lead character, a white female, and a non-white male.
  • Token White: The only white character in a cast otherwise composed of non-white characters.
  • Token Wholesome: The one character who is modestly dressed while the other characters dress in fanservice-y ways.
  • Token Wizard: The one magic user in a team of muggles and Science Heroes.
  • Two Girls to a Team: A team otherwise composed of males has two female members.
  • Twofer Token Minority: A character is part of more than one minority group not represented by the other characters.
