Thanks all, the example has been removed. A similar example is present on the main page for Genre-Killer, and may need to be rewritten:

  • The fall of cartoons made to promote celebrities, the Children's Television Act of 1990, and changing tastes would eventually deliver the coup de grace for the Saturday-Morning Cartoon block: in 1991, NBC attempted to stay relevant with Yo Yogi!, whose flop made networks think that the whole concept of a cartoon block was a thing of the past. In 1992 NBC introduced a teen-based block anchored by Saved by the Bell and a Saturday edition of Weekend Today. Other networks slowly phased out their cartoon blocks over the next decade-and-a-half, while independent stations did the same to syndicated cartoons. The rise of kid-oriented channels on cable only accelerated this trend by the 2000s. After the Nick on CBS block ended in 2006, Saturday morning cartoons on network television became strictly edutainment fodder with the exception of FOX's 4KidsTV and the children's blocks on The CW before dying out entirely in 2016 in favor of cheap-to-produce live-action edutainment shows that exploit loopholes to allow for product placement and more advertising than would otherwise be allowed.

Unless this is OK to keep. Any thoughts?

Yet another Genre-Killer example:

  • Similarly, the "comedy album" genre that became popular during the '60s and '70s was killed off in the '80s by the one-two-punch of the appearance of the "comedy concert film" on premium cable and home video, which made albums redundant, and the rise of "Weird Al" Yankovic, whose parodies became so popular that few would dare to compete with him.

This entry is too vague. What is a "comedy album?" This example seems to be talking about albums of stand-up comedy material at first, but then veers off into song parodies after that. At least as far as I can tell. I can at least say that "Weird Al" Yankovic did not kill off song parodies, the glut of low-quality parodies on YouTube probably did. Help?

Comedy albums demonstrably did not die in The '80s: Adam Sandler was releasing albums of comedic songs and sketches up to the mid-aughts, Robin Williams had a well-regarded album version of his live standup special in 2002, and Chris Rock would release album versions of his standup sets, often packaged with audio skits and songs, at around the same time.

It's one of those concepts that seems to break into the mainstream every 10 or 15 years, then fade away for a while, but seldom disappears completely. It seems to be in another low period right now, but even then The Other Wiki lists a couple of new standup album releases in 2019, so it's still not quite dead.

Bringing up this Creator Killer example since the phrase "Semi-example" strikes me as very weasel wordy.

  • Semi-example with Warner Bros. Animation. While the box-office failure of Looney Tunes: Back in Action led to WBA's feature film department, Warner Bros. Feature Animation, being shut down, the film was admittedly more of a final straw than anything else - the majority of WBA's feature films were critical and commercial flops, and the ones that did find some sort of success only managed to achieve it in one field (Space Jam at the box office; The Iron Giant and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, which is technically not a WBFA film with the critics). It has since been succeeded by Warner Animation Group, who released their first film —The LEGO Movie— in February 2014 to smashing critical and commercial praise.

Found on VvvvvaVvvvvvr:

  • Genre-Killer: VvvvvaVvvvvvr essentially killed off the SiIvaGunner fan channels that it was parodying in the first place.note  TimmyTurnersGrandDad had already outshined them all by having better and more frequent content, but VvvvvaVvvvvvr was the final nail in the coffin by providing an easier way to get into the community than creating a whole new YouTube channel. While a few of the older fan channels that had gained fans during the Reboot are still going, they're not anywhere near as popular as they were. Only TimmyTurnersGrandDad and VvvvvaVvvvvvr still see any major success (and even then, TTGD had to downscale itself to only one upload per day due to SiIvaGunner's uncancellation making TTGD obsolete). However, creators publishing "high quality rips" under their own username (ditching the Kayfabe aspect entirely) can still see success, such as Maki Ligon who actually has more subscribers than VvvvvaVvvvvvr.note

"Siiva Gunner fan channels" is not really a genre per se IMO. Should I cut?

For context Siiva Gunner is a YouTube channel that uploads video game music with a twist, where the alleged "songs" change melody, become a mashup with another song, etc. VvvvvaVvvvvvr is basically a Stylistic Suck version of Siiva Gunner loaded with joke uploads and memes. I am subscribed to both so I just figured I'd explain what they are.

On Genre-Killer:

  • Professional darts boomed in The '70s and The '80s as a very unlikely spectator sport - but one that could fill conference venues and draw millions of spectators on TV. It became a theatrical spectacle along the lines of pro wrestling or a big boxing bout - especially when two big-name heavyweights were slugging it out for a title. And then satirical sketch comedy show Not the Nine O'Clock News came along with a skewering parody. Mel Smith and Gryff Rhys-Jones aided by an over-the-top commentator voiced by Rowan Atkinson, pointed out that the reason why big name darts players were heavyweights was that... well, they were heavyweights. The parody made drinking the center of the sport, with a little actual darts going on in the background. The uneasy realization started to set in... Why are we watching extremely fat men smoking, drinking, and occasionally throwing a dart at a board? The sport faltered as a TV phenomenon and has never really recovered.

Very complain-y, plus seems very unlikely. One parody killed an entire sport? A parody I have not seen discussed anywhere but here? Granted, this seems to be talking about the U.K. (I'm an American) but even if it was true the complaining should at least be removed IMO. Thoughts?

Hey all, there's an "electronics" folder on Creator Killer. Are we allowed to trope electronics makers as creators?

Found this on Music:

  • Jason Donovan's singing career went downhill after he successfully sued a magazine for spreading rumors about his sexuality in spring 1992, thus causing most of his fans to turn their backs on him and people to hate him for accusations of "homophobia", even though he didn't mean it and he was right that the rumors were not true. Nowadays, while he still had a decent amount of fans, since he hasn't alienated all of his fanbase, he hasn't had any top ten hits since the incident and he ended up falling into obscurity. However outside music he's managed to have a pretty solid career in musical theatre, radio and various television projects.

If Jason Donovan has managed to have a solid career in various non-music areas, is his career really dead? And wouldn't this fit Overshadowed by Controversy better anyway?

Found on Film:

  • Disney's theatrical short subject development came to a screeching halt following the massive failure of Olaf's Frozen Adventure, which Disney controversially attached to initial screenings of Coco, being mostly reviled by its half-hour length, to the point exhibitors pulled the featurette after continued protests at showings (Disney then retired it, with the face-saving excuse that it was planned to run only until the special aired on TV). It got so bad that even Pixar, which had played shorts before all of its movies since A Bug's Life, stopped doing it after Bao (shown before Incredibles 2). Onward instead had a short based on a completely different franchise.

As mentioned in an earlier post, this trope is about a genre being killed, not a single company deciding not to do a certain genre anymore. "Disney theatrical shorts" is not a genre. Permission to cut?

Can Rat Pac Dune Entertainment be added to Creator Killer. Specifically,

The Sexual Harassment allegations against Brett Ratner caused all major studios to cut ties with his production company Rat Pac Dune entertainment. The last film it was involved in was 2018's Rampage, released the same month WB cut ties with him.

I'm gonna repost this in full because I didn't get a response earlier:

Alright I've got a weird one.

  • In parallel with Britpop, the British music press went hot for "intelligent Drum and Bass", the authentic new sound of black inner city Britain. Goldie's Timeless (1995), although a fine album that's generally considered a classic of the genre, opened the door for floods of by-the-numbers d'n'b clones, and the genre quickly became a cliche of television background music and film soundtracks. His 1998 follow-up Saturnz Return was slammed by a jaded press as a self-indulgent, pretentious folly. The opening track, "Mother", was over an hour long. Both Goldie and intelligent drum'n'bass subsequently left the charts, never to return.

This entry is legit IMO because "intelligent drum 'n' bass" is in fact a real genre and I can't personally name any examples, as an electronic music fan myself, that have come out since Saturnz Return. Maybe Journey Inwards by LTJ Bukem, although even then that's more of a chillout album than a d'n'b album. However, this is how the example is written on Goldie:

  • Genre-Killer: Saturnzreturn is by no means a bad album, but when it was released it came after a glut of Timeless clones, and "Mother" didn't help matters. After that album, drum'n'bass lost its commercial success until the release of Hold Your Colour.

This example is no longer legit because drum 'n' bass is verifiably not dead and the entry even says as such. I think it may need a rewrite. Should the latter example be rewritten to specifically mention the "intelligent" subgenre, rather than drum 'n' bass as a whole? Or should they both be nuked, and why? If anyone can help let me know.

Being entirely ignorant of the scene myself, I'll take your word for it that "intelligent drum 'n bass" is a sufficiently distinct subgenre of "drum 'n bass" that the former could be dead while the latter continues.

However, both entries could stand to be clearer about which work is supposed to be the Genre-Killer. As written, the first one makes a stronger case for Timeless, being one of those works that's so good that it's impossible to follow (while inspiring ill-advised attempts to do so anyway), while the second one seems to be making its case (rather poorly— "Mother didn't help matters" is Greek to anyone not already in the know) for Saturnz Return.

I would pick which work you are claiming is the Genre-Killer, write an entry that makes a clear case for it, and put that entry on both pages. If you post it here first, I'm happy to look it over to make sure it's comprehensible to someone unfamiliar with the scene

[up] Actually, come to think of it, I think both can be cut. Intelligent drum 'n' bass didn't really get killed off by a single release so much as it was overexposed (I once read Amazon reviews for Saturnzreturn and some of the reviews indicated that people disliked the album because they were tired of intelligent drum 'n' bass) and people got sick of it. Kind of like disco music or post-grunge. Although admittedly I don't know a whole ton about all of this because I did not grow up in The '90s or in the U.K., so I could be wrong.

With that in mind, should I cut?
