So I got back into Yu-Gi-Oh! recently and have also been wiki walking our various pages for it, and I've noticed a problem. Most pages still have the Japanese names listed, which goes against wiki policy on using the official and most recent translation(s) for foreign works.

I can't speak for anything after 5Ds due to lack of familiarity, but I've checked the official website and they still use the dub names for the first three series on their character pages. We don't (most blatant on Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, which outright states to use the Japanese names), yet they're clearly the recognized names by the owners of the franchise.

The point of this thread is pretty self-explanatory: fix the naming inconsistency.

Yu-Gi-Oh is a bit of an unusual case because the English dub came before the manga, which did use the Japanese names except for Pegasus, and wiki policy is to use the most recent versions where applicable. I asked about it a while back on ATT but can't seem to find the entry or a clear consensus.

On that note, why are the "Season Zero"-exclusive characters on the same page as later anime characters like Dartz? I feel like that feeds the misconception the two series are in continuity with each other.

[up]x2 I realize this, but the anime dub names are still used by the official website. I also think Joey's dub name was used for a recentish TCG pack.

The Duel Links mobile game also needs to be taken into account, but I don't own it to verify what names are used.

[up] Moving those characters seems reasonable.

Cause the page is anime-only without being specific about which anime XD; Kaoruko and Risa were mentioned in GX as an easter egg, which doesn't help.

There is a Characters.Yu Gi Oh First Anime Series page that redirects to the main Characters.Yu Gi Oh page. Another complication might be that the main cast has different traits in that series as well.

I just checked out the App Store info on Duel Links and it uses the dub names.

That's definitely a most recent translation.

So do we have any objections, or should we get started?

Well the complicated thing is that the manga is pretty much an Alternate Continuity from the anime in kind of a reverse of FMA 2003 (the only arcs that somewhat line up are Duelist Kingdom and Battle City, while the Memory World and DDM are similar, they have major differences). And the manga uses the Japanese names for the most part. I have brought up in the idea of making a manga character page and an anime character page.

How much does characterization differ between the two mediums (outside of Kaiba, who I know gets Adaptational Heroism in the transition to anime)?

Also, how different are the manga in the sequel series like GX?

Let's see:

  • Kaiba's personality change of course.
  • Yugi is generally more comedic giving him more personality.
  • Dark Yugi is more sadistic at first, though he mellows. His changes in character are most notable since he seems pretty different at the beginning as a mysterious and extreme guardian angel who is amused by is opponents and actually has a character arc involving his own hubris that is not as well defined in the anime.
  • Jonouchi/Joey and Honda/Tristan are generally more serious and badass. They comedic moments every now and then but neither are treated like comic relief. Jonouchi also has father issues that the anime removes.
  • Bakura has a more defined personality and hangs around the group a lot more.
  • Dark Bakura is mostly the same, but his final identity is different (Thief King Bakura and Zorc rather than just Zorc).
  • Speaking of, Thief King Bakura is not possessed, so we actually do get his character.
  • Mokuba starts out very different as an antagonist. He is a jerk at times, though he mellows. He is also a gamer and gets kidnapped far less.
  • Ryuji/Duke has a very different personality and motivation.
  • Shadi starts out as a major antagonist. Because of this, the cast views him with distrust for the rest of the series.
  • Haga/Weevil and Ryuzaki/Rex never go full villains. Hell, Ryuzaki is not that bad, just kind of a jerk at times.
  • Akhenaden's arc has a major change as his present day ghost participates in the RPG as an extension of Zorc. He manipulates his own RPG character and causes his own Faceā€“Heel Turn.
  • Several characters die who are Spared by the Adaptation. Most notable are Pegasus and Bandit Keith.
  • Most importantly though is that there are a ton of characters that never appeared in the anime, and are manga only. A few examples would be Mr. Clown (Ryuji's father, and the original Big Bad of the DDM arc), Johji (Honda's nephew who supports Kaiba), Hanasaki (a friend of Yugi's who served as a recurring character), and Hirutani (a violent gangster who Jonouchi used to be affiliated with). That's not getting into the tons of minor villains that were not featured in the anime.

As for sequel series, they all have completely different stories in the manga, and such different characters.

Plus there's stuff that's different from the manga and Toei anime, like manga!Miho being a shy student librarian and Toei!Miho being an extroverted girly girl.

Might be one of the few manga/anime that would benefit from splitting into their respective namespaces...

The https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=YMMV.YuGiOhGX page also mentions GX named being switched between. The GX anime came before the manga. Which names does the manga use?

GX manga uses dub names.

Then the GX names should definitely be swapped back to the dub versions.

Bump.

I've swapped out the GX names on a couple pages already. Haven't touched the other series due to manga discrepancies.

Are we going to split off manga versions of characters into their own pages?

Bump.

Arc V episode titles in the Recap subpage are using the Japanese names. This is a no-go and I'm going to start changing them back tomorrow.

Also, the Arc V manga is clearly not an adaptation (the first sentence of an overview I read mentioned time travel, so...). The character names on the anime pages will need to be fixed.
